  1. The other story... on Patrick Naughton Arrested · · Score: 2

...this news bite appears and a couple of minutes later it is pulled from the index page. The title changes from "Patrick Naughton Jailed" to "Patrick Naughton Arrested" and the story remains off the index page in spite of a new news link being added to it.

While the initial title was incorrect, and thus irresponsible journalism, having something yanked off Slashdot is just to wierd for me. Something that is a valid news article is hotter than publishing information on how to access people's personal email when the Hotmail crack was released?

How does that work? The Slashdot community wants to know this story. Tell us little people who slapped your wrists and what next.

Oh, and convicted pedophiles deserve all that they get. I can't comment on the FBI procedures as they seem the only way to track down this kind of crime. I wouldn't like my privacy violated in this kind of way but... No. Heinous crime is heinous crime.

  2. Certification for Programmers on Ask Slashdot: Is Professional Engineering Certification Necessary? · · Score: 1

The way I see it, certification is going to become important for "software engineers" / programmers. Personally, as an employer and geek I know that this is just a piece of paper with you name on. So it doesn't matter. But that is irrelevant. So is a degree. What matters is experience and drive - end of story.

So why do I think there is a necessity for certification? Simple: liability. However Y2K pans out, so much money has been spent "fixing" problems and evaluating software that liability for programmers has become an issue. I don't think that any Y2K issues are programmers fault - a question of being too clever and *assuming* that software would be rewritten before it becomes a problem... The rest is history.

No. The important thing is for programmers to be listened to, carrying the weight of professional responsibility. When a programmer says "This code works to the best of my ability but there may be issues with (database indexes|date fields in the year 10k|memory usage when the number of users exceeds X|backdoors in our web based email) this should be noted, evaluated and then acted upon in the right time.

Certification is a question of trust and responsibility (not just a piece of paper), so that employers that *can't* go over source code can feel at ease. You know it makes sense.

Oh. And don't get an MCSE - from my experience that only teaches you to reboot/re-write/re-format...

  3. Geek Girls on Nitrozac Answers · · Score: 2
From my experience, geek girls are around everywhere. I have noticed two basic categories:
    1. The proto-geek girls tend to keep pretty quiet around geeks due to the "biting off of heads" factor.
They say something that is not quite right so you dismiss them as the competitive "I win, you lose" thing comes into play. To let these geek girl types develop, you need to give them some space. There are plenty of women proto-geeks around and their potential is often hampered by the male dominated industry.

    2. The other group is composed of women who have broken through the barriers: they are twice as smart and hard working as you. You can't dismiss or ignore them so don't try.
They can whup you at pretty much anything they have set their minds to. You'll notice that women who are into videogames are exceptional more often than just ok. Go down to the arcades and watch her kick the guys off the Marvel vs. Capcom machine...

If you want to see more female geeks then we have to revise our "oh-so-patronising" ways and not automatically treat all women like marketing managers. And if one asks you a question? Answer nicely without beating your chest - just a hint...

Another hint: don't go out with someone in the same field - it is a nightmare. After I had my first argument with slammed doors over device drivers, I realised why this was a bad idea ;)

This may be a better deal if you're looking for Linux, bandwidth, etc.

    cihost.com

They offer dual PII 450 machines with multiple OC-3 connections and 12GB bandwidth. There are also lots of features including SSH Telnet access, compiling C/C++, Perl, PHP, usw. About $20 PCM.

(no, I don't work for them)
