H.264 is still in active development. Although in theory advanced profile would give better quality, the processing power required is quite higher. Also, the codebase is not optimized yet.
What you are suggesting is like JPG2000 is much better than JPEG, so dont use JPEG. And, we are nowhere near the same range of differences in mpeg4 simple vs advanced profile implementations

FYI, what the parent says is the history of Divx. An open source project called OpenDivx was started to extend/enhance the 'illegal DivX:)'. Once it reached a critical mass and a good code base, DivxNetworks apparently decided to allegedly take up the code base and convert it to a closed source Divx codec. In theory, OpenDivx was left to continue beyond version 4.0Alpha, but it never did. People rather started a GPL version and called it XVID
As of now, Divx vx Xvid is like BSD vs Linux. Both are equally good, neck in neck. Only difference is, Xvid cannot, by law, distributed as executable. MPEG4 is patented and Xvid is only distributed as source (except by good folks like Nic & Koepi)

AVI files are quite compressible because the audio and video portions are to be of a standard size, whereas, they are often not. Padding is used which can be removed by compression. Typical overhead of using a VBR audio/video in this container is the order of 5% or so. QuickTime is much better than AVI in this respect
This isn't a joke. Seriously, I read somewhere (cant remember) that since lake ontario water is quite cold once you go a few feet under water, the city of toronto was/is thinking of sucking this water to cool office buildings by a couple of degrees, so the air-conditioner has to work less
True, but any radio signal has harmonics which spread across a much wider band. Incidentally, microwaves use the 800MHZ band too with a very wide band of harmonics. Cell phones use 850, 1900 or 1800MHZ, their harmonics cause not much more interference (at a few mW that the cell phones transmit) than something like wireless (2.4GHz) of equivalent wattage
which is among the 2% of frequencies in this part of the electromagnetic spectrum reserved for use by radio astronomers
So, if the plane is on line of radio sight, it could affect 2% of data captured. So, in a day, I have maybe 5 minutes of 2% bad data searching for ET vs a very practical use of cell phone.
Not to troll, but whats next, using microwave oven disrupts SETI, so we need to stop using microwave?
Such a feature already exists in Outlook, you can have all your mails in the inbox/sent items and just put them in multiple categories. A mail from mom on saturday dinner plans goes to family, mom, plans category so that in each of those category views, i see the same mail
That said, I havent seen too many people using this feature. People still like to physically move the mail to 'family' folder and then to view a bunch of mails, hope that they have the same subject or date range.
People have been trained to use the folder paradigm, changing would take quite a bit of effort
And, what is the point in making a very specialized system that they have into open source. Like, we would have a swarm of people trying to help NYSE. Please remember, OSS only applies when the software in question is needed by the many so that the some can derive value in enhancing it
Only 7% of outfits with no Linux servers plan to add some over the next year.
Can we safely assume that we are approaching the limit of diminishing returns, all those who are amicable to convert, have already done so.
Also, this doesnt mean Linux is slowing/stopping. Companies with some servers would definitely go forward with more, thus growing the overall Linux implementations.
If you read the discussions on cdfreaks, digital-digest and doom9, you will understand that even releasing the code to open is a violation of whatever agreement the guy has reached with SOmecompaNY. One more reason why such projects need to be open source
Main reason I like Knoppix is it has all you need in one CD. Once it goes over 1 CD, I guess, Ill move to some other small distro which serves my purpose of emergency repair (like puppy http://goosee.com/puppy which is what I use now-a-days)
Not sure if it does matter. Most of the distros are based off the testing and unstable trees. The main reason for the Debian standard release is compatiability with many architectures while other distros focus on x86 (I believe)
Not to troll, but what is the main advantage of sarge vis-a-vis other distributions based on the debian unstable/testing tree (like knoppix/ubunto and a dozen other main ones)
Another reason MACs and *nix are more secure is that these have been frequently built ground up breaking all compatibility. Under windows, chances are, I can still run an app from the early 80s and expect it to work (there is a good article on joelonsoftware that talks about why MS did what it did)
I'm tired of people saying some apps need admin privileges. If your app need admin rights you have the following options
If it is a simple runnable application, use runas. There are toolkits that dont even need the password to be passesd as a parameter
If it is a system service, you already have a run-as option. Use it
It is not as if we are trying to restrict the user, rather restrict the applications that the user runs from doing bad things. Of course, IMO, the best option is to have any program needing higher rights makes the OS popup a dialog asking for confirmation specifying exactly what is needed (special file access, network access)
Dow Chemical's motto is "Living. Improved Daily". Unless you're one of 15,000-30,000 people in Bhopal, India, of course
FYI, it was Union Carbide who owned the Bhopal plant. After the accident, UC (smartly) sold themselves to Dow, who took over the assets and part liabilities (the multi million dollar settlement to the Indian Govt.).
1. Flash is good because it can load partial pages. Well, I got news, so does XMLHTTP and is a whole lot more efficient. Incidentlally, one of the nicer things to come off MS. Google uses it for google suggest.
2. Springs up music, so does java and just plain MIDI embedded in HTML. Just because all do it, doesnt make it any better. Any user experience not expected by the user is bad. Simple.
3. CPU usage. I understand most people have high processors and should not notice the hiccup. But I dont recollect giving macromedia or any one else for that matter permission to use my CPU to show me how 'cool' they are. Just because streets are abundant doesnt mean, I can throw my thrash there since it is not like it is adding up a pile to the junk on the roads?
We are not talking here about why flash is worse than the rest, there are many bad uses technologies there, but right now, we are discussing about flash. When the time comes for javascript, trust me, people have equal number of gripes against it.
Coincidentally, this came this morning http://weblogs.asp.net/oldnewthing/archive/2005/02/11/371042.aspx
This guy knows what he says. Bottom line, browsers HAVE to implement widgets internally to overcome OS limits (like number of controls). IE doesnt do anything special. Even the advantage it had by preloading when the shell comes up is lost with the prefetching of other applications that is done by windows.
RTFA, he did test the MOOX version too and find it actually slower than the standard firefox build, go figure. My guess is the firefox team is already optimizing the browser since it is getting popular in the windows world (usually i686 instructions)
They don't do anything, they get blamed, try to do something, they get blamed. Come out of the MS bashing mentality to see that they are trying to resolve the issue. The only reason spyware is so prevalent in IE is because of monoculture, nothing to do with engineering
Why is it what when claria/gator or anyone else does simillar things, it is evil, but when google does it, it is fair. I'm not against google, in fact I think they are the best thing that happened to the internet but then Geico does have a valid position. When a prospective policy buyer hears about geico on the radio or tv (paid for by Geico), they go to google and search for the web site.
Now, I understand the ads are on the right side but the home page summary looks very bland on the search result, while the ad on the side is more attractive and the customer might go there instead.

I have also used DSL for long, but IMHO puppy is better (boots to GUI in under 20 seconds) and can save your data in a file in any OS

Maybe, but practically, it is a lot cheaper to have a tower and transmiter supporting 1000s of connections than laying cables for them.

I believe it was a 'cease and desist' before going to court. So, google has to stop using the GEICO keyword until a ruling is given
