  1. topheavy administration on Virtual-U (SimUniversity) Now Available · · Score: 1

in order to make it fully realistic, you should be able to model your school after corporate structures. that is what is happening at my school right now - the CSU Chico administration has been steadily increasing administrative pay rates and expenses, while replacing tenured professors with part-time staff. i wouldn't be suprised if many other schools in the U.S. are following similar trends of corporatization.

here are the stats given by the chapter of our faculty association:
"The number of administrators increased by more than 125 percent from 1975-76 to 1998-99. During the same period, the number of full-time equivalent-students grew by 16.8 percent, and the number of faculty increased by approximately 6.8 percent."

    peachy.

  2. i fully agree on Barcode Maker Responds After Forcing Drivers Offline · · Score: 2

what commander taco is doing is childish and disrespectful to slashdot readers and the guy who wrote the letter. instead of allowing slashdot readers to read the letter and form their own opinions on what is being said, taco is forcing his own opinions down everybodies throats. as a reporter, taco should adopt a degree of professionalism and limit his comments to short remarks. everything beyond that belongs in the comments section -- even for taco. he is no more qualified to refute the letter than an ac like me. if taco wanted to discredit the letter at the time of the post he should have gotten a lawyer to do the commenting. or at least somebody who is involved in the cuecat ordeal like one of the guys who wrote a linux driver for the thing. i'm not saying that i agree with the cuecat guy. i just think it's a shame that slashdot would demonstrate such unprofessionalism. in a way, taco's behavior discredits the entire slashdot community because it indicates a biased and closed mindset.

  4. does the fsf need money? on GPL Violation - NVIDIA · · Score: 1

i agree that the story was handled well, but shouldn't the fsf be using cases such as this one to make a little money?

nvidia is a wealthy company. in the last year their stock jumped from around $20 a share to over $90 today.

perhaps the fsf could hire a lawyer to sue nvidia for copyright violation and with ralphs permission the settlement money would go to the fsf to fund further open source development. IANAL so i'm not really sure if it is possible to make any money off of such a case but it was just an idea.

On the other hand it might scare off companies from wanting to have anything to do with GPL'd code or linux if they can get burned so easily.

  5. How will this money be used? on Feature: After the Red Hat IPO Ball is Over · · Score: 2

So Red Hat is worth 5.6 billion. Anyone have an idea how this money will be spent? Obviously RH now has to walk the line between making it's investors in Wall Street happy and not angering off the (easily annoyed) linux community. According to the article it seems RH has been great towards the community, so can we assume that this means that a lot of money start flowing in to linux development? If that is so this IPO is A Good Thing indeed. Thumb
