  1. Re:Your version is better on More Moderation Madness · · Score: 1

Here's a thought along those lines.

DISCLAIMER: I thought of this last night after beer#4.

How about an 'Angel of Death'/'Angel of Mercy' catagory(well, with all this talk of karma and such, the name shouldn't be too outlandish). Make it very, very hard to attain. Like, 100 karma points. Anyway, give these 'Angels' the power to moderate up or down at will, and to M2 if needed. Also, they could act as intermediaries(sp?) between Rob and the rest of the readership. Post unfairly moderated? Tell an Angel. Angel not responsive? Then go to Rob. This lets Rob get back to the really important things, like working on Slash 0.4 and surfing Jennicam. B-)

Reasoning: Anyone with 100+ karma points will obviously be an avid reader and veteran moderator. Their posts will be consistantly on-topic and informative. And, most importantly, these people will have a deep understanding of the workings of /., and more than likely be able to be very impartial.

Pros: A group of the /. readership with the ability to help keep the peace. No cries of censorship, less work for Rob, and a way for the creme de la creme to give back to the community (/., not OS) in a truly meaningful way.

Cons: Obviuos ease of abuse. Possible political agendas. Maybe too much power over a readership that revolts at the thought of having decisions made for them.

Still, I think it's a pretty good idea. And if you think I'm in it because I hope to be one, well, check my User Info page and phear my zero points of karma.

  2. Thanks Rob on More Moderation Madness · · Score: 1

Up until now, I haven't had a desire to moderate. (the checkbox on my preferences page was always unchecked) However, in light of recent events and the hard work Rob's put into it, I have decided to give it a try. I feel that the moderation scheme is being refined to the point of perfection, and if I can help give back to this forum, I will.

    Thanks, again, Rob.

I just read the Bucket Proposal(tm) and found it absolutly hilarious.

Here's a few of the points for those not wishing to go to the site...

    a. Stability. Buckets would meet performance criteria that would
ensure that the buckets were sufficiently unstable that if a child were to fall into one of them, the bucket would tip over. The buckets would have to tip over if subjected separately to specified horizontal and vertical forces.

Great. A bucket that's always falling over. Useful, eh?

    c. Liquid retention. Buckets could be constructed so that they
cannot retain liquid. (They still could be used to ship solid materials in a liner.)

Uhhh...what??? A bucket that cannot hold liquid? Isn't that currently known as a 'box'?

Anyway, this is the kind of thinking that's kept me fairly apolitical for that last eight years. I for one believe that it's time for Tom Clancy's Debt of Honor scenario to happen.
