Not true. A free market economy needs controls to ensure fair competition and a level playing field. Just like boxing has established rules to ensure a fair fight. Tyson violated one of those rules and I didn't see anybody saying "hey let the guy be - he is just trying to be successful".

There are rules in conducting business. For instance, price fixing can be very successful, however, its illegal and an abuse of power.

You cannot restrict your competitions ability to get to the market unfairly like MS has done with computer OEM's. You are suppose to compete on price, features and quality.

MS has used the free market system to get their products at the top

MS abused the free market to get on top and stay there. That is the point. This is like defending the Mafia by saying they are using free market to make a living.

A successful free market (ie one that generate the most wealth for the majority of it members) requires fair competition.

Consummers have been harmed by MS dominance. 5 years ago the cost of a well equiped PC cost around $ 2500 and the O/S cost was around $100 ($80 for OS/2 if you remember). Today a well equiped PC costs around $ 1200 and a copy of MS Win98 cost close to $200. The price of computing is indeed coming down but not software especially in area where MS dominates (O/S, Office, Presentation, etc.) Just a thought.

So we should let a monopoly exist so that some people will hate this monopoly and provide motivatation for these people to "fuel" innovations.

Or we should let a monopoly run rough shod over any competitor so as to bring stability and uniformity into the technology field.

Great logic. Why don't we just appoint a leading industry to control and dominate every segment of our society and the we can set back reap the benefits.

Grap a history book and try to understand the need for anti-trust controls in a competive free market economy.

We just finished writting a 3.5k line data acquisition system using Perl / CGI.pm / Apache / GNUplot for the Navy. The system acquired over 80 channels of temperature data over a RS-485 bus and allowed operators to monitor, display and archive data via a web interface. The Brooklyn Museum of Art faces the loss of a third of its annual budget, even eviction, because the mayor of New York City finds a painting in an exhibit offensive.

My take on the Mayor's action is that he does not believe that the painting in question serves the public interest. The exhibit of the "art work" is being underwriten with public funds and he does not feel that it is an appropiate expenditure of his budget. He is an elected offical. If people do not approve his actions he will not be re-elected.

The Mayor has no qualms whatsoever for the painting to be displayed in a private museum and has he has stated so.

Furthermore, I wonder what the reaction would have been if the subject was Martin Luther King or Gandi ? It would have been labeled as racist or mean-spirited trash - which is exactly what it is.

Look if anyone want to be a "ground breaking" artist these days - forget talent and skill - just select some popular religous icon, mix it up with several bodily fluids from various orgins, include some sexual context and you have a masterpiece ! The art critics will rave over your genius.
