well the solaris and linux breakins were before my time and I don't have access to the files reporting the breakins (or they don't exist)
but yes, a lot of exploits are in applications running on a system. by comparison, I see a lot more application expoloits than operating system exploits. though slashdot just got an article about the linux kernel crashing with just shell and c compiler access, and there are plenty of users on systems you just can't trust.
I admin a web server at my university. I have to say *knock on wood* that it has stayed up and not been cracked into (yet). Unlike the previous web server running slowlaris 8, which has been broken into several times. We also have a linux server for the computer science majors, that also has been broken into. freebsd seems to be pretty solid in my experience. anyone have diffrent or same experinces as this?
