  1. Re:Netscape on Has Netscape's Browser Become Too Self-Serving? · · Score: 1

Close, but no cigar. Opera doesn't quite fully support CSS. We use CSS heavily on our site (name witheld to prevent the /. effect) and Opera many times chooses the wrong bg colors. Netscape 6 doesn't come close to supporting standards (as has been cited by WASP). We're forced to go with IE as it renders everything on our site perfectly. The only problem is in convincing some of our dealers to drop the holy war issue.

I have a VAIO PCG F430 and I love it. Would have preferred a better video board and there are some other minor things that I'd change, but overall it's a great notebook.

The new one is BUTT UGLY and will not be on my want list at ANY TIME.

Sony just took a left turn. YUCK.

  3. Re:20 Million?! on MP3.com Pays Damages to Sony · · Score: 1

This analogy is not entirely applicable to MP3's situation.

We pay for auto insurance to leverage the resources of the insurance company in the event of an accident while using the insured vehicle. Also, the state requires that you insure the vehicle.

Insurance is protection against something that might happen - not necessary if you have enough money to cover possible expenses.

The MP3 situation is PAST TENSE. The "accident" had already happened. MP3 already KNEW that they were wrong and simply setup a fund with which to buy their way out of trouble.

  4. Re:20 Million?! on MP3.com Pays Damages to Sony · · Score: 1

The article stated that MP3.com set aside $150 million for the express purpose of settling the disputes with the various record companies. To me this speaks directly to MP3.com recognizing that what it was/is doing is illegal and that they would have to eventually make things right.

  6. The AWS "WeatherBug" on Ideas for High School Computer Projects? · · Score: 1

Haven't seen this posted yet: The AWS WeatherBug looks like a nifty project for a high school science class to get involved in. I didn't research it deep enough to determine costs, or whether the students would have to build any interfaces to the system, or even if it's just a turnkey operation.

But, there are installations in schools across the country that are supplying real-time, or near real-time weather data through the internet to desktop clients.

Good point. I remember reading about this guy stealing the RXC moniker a while back when it happened. InfoWorld published a lot of words when it first happened and I was astonished to see Stephens continue to use the name.

To me, he's lost any credibility he might have had as you don't know which words are his and which articles belong to another writer.

Yes, IBM *WAS* the enemy. For me it still is... IBM does a lot of good things, but it also shoots itself in the foot MANY TIMES. Hmm, anyone have a micro-channel bus handy?

My experience with IBM software has been that it is large, kludgy, and slow.

M$ response SHOULD be to jump on the bandwagon and port it's apps over, or even to bring out it's own linux variant. Hmm, wouldn't THAT piss off a lot of people!

Don't know about the DVD you looked at, but I looked at several in my collection (over 180) and they all had something to the effect that they were for use on a PC/Windows system ONLY (other than their NORMAL use in a DVD player)

To me, it all stems from Ray Noorda's obsession with Bill Gates. He, Noorda, trashed Novell in pusuit of his personal vendetta. Then he jumps on board Caldera and brings along DR DOS only to continue the lawsuit.

    That's visionary management?

BTW - anyone know where Ray is now?
