  1. What does computer science have to do with IT? on Critical Shortage of IT Workers in Coming Years · · Score: 1
I work in a large IT shop and maybe 1 percent of the people in my shop have CS degrees. We have degrees in physics, philosophy, English, and psychology. We have all gravitated to IT over the course of our lives. Some of us can even write pretty good code.

We don't write compilers or compute very large primes --We just support everyday applications like payroll and and collaboration software. We write tools (scripts usually) to make our jobs easier and generally try to make things work as advertised. We communicate with users and try to help them do their jobs as well.

  2. Re:A good use for this. on Internet Hunting Banned in California · · Score: 1

    Go Ross!
Killing for the sake of killing is idiocy. Killing for food is what we (humans) do. I don't hunt. But I can't wee where it would be any worse than breeding an animal in a confined area and slaughtering them wholesale. I've heard that chickens are bred such that some of them can't even support their own weight. That seems at least as barbaric as hunting. Are you going to stop going to the store and stop buying chicken? Most people aren't.

  3. Out them on Handling Viruses in an Uncontrolled Network? · · Score: 1

Sometimes in a shared environment, peer pressure might work. When the network is brought down. Fix the problem and notify everyone in the complex -- (I'm not sure if its legal of course.)
"Sorry about the network outage today-- Davey Jones brought down the network via a ping flood. If you have any question about what happened please see Davey in apt 23B."

  4. Bear's Best is Fantasy not Hard Sci-Fi on Darwin's Radio · · Score: 1

My Favorite Greg Bear book was hardly Hard Sci-Fi.
Songs of Earth and Power is almost totally Fantasy.

  5. Anonymous Cowards on Here Come The Weblogs · · Score: 1

I think that often, anonymous cowards are just people who feel the need to comment but are just too lazy (or busy) to register.

  6. Cool with emacs on Pedals for your PC (but not for gaming) · · Score: 1

I have a friend who lives in Emacs and he has pedals mapped to Meta and Control. He was getting hand problems and they helped him out. The pedals combined with some wild ergonomic keyboard and a Dvorak keymapping also seem to make him the fastest typist I know.
