  1. Re:Microsoft? ERP? on Microsoft Eyes PeopleSoft Customers · · Score: 1

Fleeing the oppressive Oracle to attain the safety of Microsoft seems to me like fleeing oppressive California for the safety of Stalinist Russia.

I don't think it is the more open support of Oracle they're trading for Microsoft's. I think it is the higher cost of support. A more appropriate metaphor would be that they are fleeing the high property values of oppressive California by heading to the low property values of Stalin's Siberia.

    I could be wrong--I didn't RTFA.

  6. Real Real Users on Automated Software QA/Testing? · · Score: 1

I've found that users who will eventually use the system are the best testers. This means deploying a full development environment, and mimicking live data. Try to get someone that has been using software in the particular context for a while. They'll tell you about the features they loved in the systems they used in the 1970's, as well as the features they've always wanted. Try to get a user who is just starting in the industry. They will tell you which parts of your app don't make sense. Those parts are the ones that are going to drive up training costs in the future. Outside of getting a solid product, there is an added advantage to this approach. The test users will recognize their suggestions in the finished product, which increases user buy-in in the end.

Cruise ship in the middle of the Caribbean. I had to check my work e-mail while on vacation. I glanced over at Slashdot since the boss was already picking up the tab for the $0.50/minute Internet charge, and I needed a break from the sunburn.

So you don't need to have bug-free physics engine? So, when a beta-tester's avatar starts moving in unexpected ways, just tell them that God is pissed that they've been hogging all the ammo? Or they've been possessed?
