Just in from "Nettavisen" the largest internet-only newspaper in Norway ( here ). EFF has sent a fax offering to pay for a good norvegian lawyer.

First thought is that the authenticity of the fax is not determined.

If you still think its good you should check out this, a 50 something K voxel engine in java (warning Explorer 4 only).

  4. Why Transmeta will deliver... on The Transmeta Conspiracy Part V · · Score: 1
There are a couple of reasons why I believe that this company actually will deliver:

    1. They have bright people working for them AND they don't quit (e.g. no frustrations)
    2. They have managed to not give out information, a "company-feature" you only see in companies where the absolutely all the employees believe the product 100%.
    3. They wont run out of money...

Funny thing, this post came just after a blackout outside of Oslo. Quite a big area went down and created a power surge that was strong enough to shut down computer equipment.

It makes you wonder when you see the date...

Well, in norway you can't store information about people without getting consent from a gov't agency. Then you have to get permission to use that data. That means that e-commerce sites can't store personal data that is irrelevant to performing a transaction. It's so strict that the phone book can't be published on the internet without written consent from all the people entered into the database, even though anybody can buy a phone directory on print or cd-rom.

  7. Overreliance on Smile for the US Secret Service · · Score: 2
It seems to me that this project could lead to an over reliance on computers. There are a couple of concerns that imediately comes to mind.
    • What happens if some clerk puts the wrong personal information with your picture. A friend of mine got screwed over after having a son, he was given his sons first name and they took 3 years to fix it. It seems to me that a wrong picture can do a lot of harm.
    • If you have plastic surgery, are you responsible for updating your picture?

It seems to me that it boils down to a question of use. Will people treat this database as a tool or as an authorative information source. The latter can be very harmfull to individual freedom.

  8. US Export Laws on GNU Privacy Guard (GPG) PGP Alternative · · Score: 2
I've seen a lot of posts where people are concerned about the US crypto export laws. I can understand that US developers are afraid that the NSA will knock on their door should the contribute to the GPG source. But, if GPG is as good as it claims, why don't you send your source patches encrypted with GPG(!) It is not illegal to work on the source in the US, and the NSA will never get proof that you have sent any patches out of the country because they're encrypted with 4096(+/-)-bit keys.

okay so this person has access to 40 million accounts or whatever..

Not one person, all people. It took me about 2 minutes from I heard about the hack till I had the URL that let me get into anybody's email. That "Hotmail was hacked" is just a not correct, that "a method was uncovered that let anyone get into any user account at Hotmail" is a more precise description. Get the facts straight.

I could for example have used this opportunity to log onto admin@hotmail.com (yes, it was also open), sendt a mail requesting some personal information from the users, and I could have waited there about 13 hours to collect the answers because MS didn't shut the server down and gotten home, free, and away with loads of information I should not have had. And that is just one thing you could have done, there is plenty of others.
