There is a distro based on knoppix called flonix specially designed to fit on an USB memory stick.
But your laptop is obviously too old to be able to boot from an USB memory stick.
In my opinion the best solution is to use GRUB to boot it from the floppy drive.
You can find a tutorial at this URL that explains how to create a floppy disk with GRUB to load the OS on the memory stick.
