Indeed...NeoGeo, 3DO, Genesis [didnt fail but didn't reach a freaction of the success of the SNES], TurboGrafx, Jaguar, Sega Master System, and Atari 7600 to add some more to the list...
What color were the NES, SNES, and PSX? Hmm?

If he linked to the page, that would be a totally different story. I would not see that as illegal [wrong, maybe, but not illegal]. However, by providing a direct link to an illegal, file, he broke the law. If i posted warez.com/apps/photoshop.exe as a link or something and said "THIS IS PHOTOSHOP FULL VERSION!" that's...........illegal.
I can't believe you're defending this kid. If you made a page with direct links to all kinds of illegal mp3's and warez, then...well, first, I would think you're pretty pathetic, and second, would you be surprised if you were sued by the recording industry or adobe? The kid's computer was probably filled with mp3's!

Come on! You've got to be kidding me. Your bomb making "parallel" is totally NOT that. If you made bombs and gave them out to people, THAT would be parallel. There's nothing wrong with the information. This kid, and the guy who makes bombs and gives them to people (or even the guy who goes around telling everyone that you can get ready-made bombs from this guy over here) are definitely doing something BAD. There is a BIG difference between writing and DOING. Its called free SPEECH. I will defend that freedom to the death. This kid wasn't providing information or anything, he was blatantly disobeying the law.
There's nothing noble about this kid. He's a 17 year old punk who helped someone make money by breaking the law. THAT is what I think you're missing. The guy who ripped the MP3's wasnt doing it for the public good, he was doing it to increase traffic to his site and make money. So was the 17 year old. If someone paid me to stand on the street corner handing out burned cd's of Windows to increase traffic to his store, we would both be breaking the law.
The precedent that is set here is that[at least in Sweeden] it's ILLEGAL to distribute illegitimate copies of copyrighted information, and it is also ILLEGAL to provide a front for someone doing just that. This kid made it just as easy, if not easier, to obtain illegal software as the guy who ripped them. Back to our Windows cd's example. If I made 1000 copies of the cd, and you handed some out, then...guess what, the cops would take you in too, and you would be convicted.
This kid deserves what he is going to get come wednesday.

  5. Re:Why is this so hard to believe? on Teen Sued for /Linking/ to MP3s · · Score: 1

I agree with you completely. The thing is, most people seem to have little problem with ripping MP3's in the first place - the internet community [forgive my use of that term] is pissed off at the recording industry already for trying to take away their "rights" by cracking down on MP3's and pushing secure formats. Slashdot readers tend to hate copyrights in the first place...
This kid deserves whatever he gets. Ripped MP3's are illegal. Period. If I had a link on my page that lead directly do a download of Photoshop or Win 98, I would be totally not surprised if Microsoft and the FBI came knocking on my door. Go to warez.com, and see the dozens of sites with hundreds of links to illegal prate copies of programs..even if they don't have any on their servers. Then tell us there's not a problem with this.

Good idea, but no. That's how some blocking software works. Pages/sites won't be edited and labelled according to a text search algorithm or anything..apparently they would either be self-rated and approved or rated by an agency. If someone writes an informative page on breast cancer, its pretty safe to assume that it won't get labelled as pornography. Anyway...it is a horrible, horrible idea nonetheless. Our rights to free speech and expression are slowly being taken away and made illegal...the WWW does not create killers and terrorists.... *gets off his soapbox while he can
