Definitely recommend these folks' web site (Cherie and Chris)
Also HIGHLY recommend the Escapees Club (http://www.escapees.com and http://www.rvnetwork.com/ for the discussion board). This is one of the original organizations for full timers. If you can, their "Boot Camps" are a great way to learn about living on the road and RV's in general. About 1/2 of the people will not have bought their RV yet.
If you don't have a trailer or truck yet, research, shop, shop, research. NEVER believe a trailer salesman about how little truck you need or a truck salesman about how big of a trailer you can pull.
Coming from a large US farm background (2000+ acres of corn and soybeans) I can say the GM crops reduce fuel and chemical consumption in many ways.
For instance in the 70's, we used to run mechanical cultivators through the corn at least once and the beans 2-4 times to root out the weeds. (think big tractors). Now, my brothers don't even own a cultivator. They use spot treatments of Roundup and other chemicals to kill the weeds. And believe me, at the cost of Roundup, they experiment all the time with reduced concentrations, spot treatments, etc. Fewer trips, fewer chemicals, less cost to the farmer.
Check out http://www.kaybee.org/~kirk/html/linux.html for information on autorpm. It is pretty handy for keeping track of which rpms need to be updated. It comes configured for RedHat, but it can be pointed at any ftp sites that you want, so it should be usable with Mandrake as well
I am a WASP computer consultant in the MidWest US where I have been employed in the electronics field for over 15 years. I was recently at a site where all of the managers and day shift personnel were black, and the night shift people were white. This was the first time that I had encountered that distribution of ethnicities. It was an interesting experience to realize how this went against my own assumptions and stereotypes. Didn't realize that I had them. A learning experience for sure.
Since I started this sub thread, I'd better jump back in here.
With over 1100 comments (and counting), the vast majority of them detailing the problems and pressures associated with all levels of public schools I have to ask "Why would ANY parent willingly subject their child to such abuse?". Especially when there is an option.
We homeschool for a number of reasons including religious, acedemic and social ones. Our children have all been in the public school system at one point or another, and 4 of the 5 managed to get 'labeled' with one tag or another. We saw that the schools were not going to be able to meet their needs, and that they were going to be facing many of the issues expressed in the comments on this article. So we did what we believe to be the best solution.
I am personally much more concerned about my children's character than about their acedemic, social or atheletic achievements during the first 18 years of their life. I want them to have certain life skills by the time they leave home. We are actively pursuing projects and opportunities for them to learn those character qualities and skills.
We have just about completed high school with our oldest. The others will be home schooled all the way to graduation (or whatever) as well.
To address the 'what about other religions' question... I don't agree with the idea that children should be left to chose their own ways. If you want fruit from a fruit tree, you have to tend it. You have to prune it, stake it out, fertilize it, weed around it, spray it for bugs, etc, etc. Same with kids. I believe my children are a gift to me from God, that I am a steward for a time, that my job includes training them in certain skills and attitudes. One of those skills is the ability to reason and understand WHY I believe certain things to be true or not. (and by extension, why I want them to believe it.) They are free to question my beliefs, but they must be able to show a reason behind that.
We discuss science, creation, evolution, philosophy, and social belief systems often. Naturally the discussions are guided in the way I think is correct. Just like the discussions in a classroom are always directed by the teacher. That's what he gets paid to do, direct the students in learning.
Poke around the web for a while, or just read some of the other comments here from/.ers who have been home schooled.
I would like to point out that you don't HAVE to send your child to school. You can home school them.
The social 'pressure cooker' is one reason that my wife and I do home school our 5 children. We want to know what is happening in their lives and to be there to help and guide them.
As I said in another post, I seem to have been an exception...a successful geek/jock. Didn't realize I was so rare.....
I agree with you. Our environment DOES effect how we think and what we are >likely to do in a situation. The ad industry knows that what we see and hear (even when we don't like it) will effect what we buy. So why do people think that what they see and hear by choice (ie, games, entertainment, etc) WON'T effect them?
Just like real environmental hazards, different people have different 'tolerance' levels. I personally am not effected by smoke; it takes a lot to get me to cough. My wife has battled asthma and allergies, she has problems with a little whiff. Likewise I believe that what we see and hear DOES have an effect on us. And given our personal situation, MAY make it easier to do things that are unusual.
This in no way absolves anyone of the blame. You still have to live (or die) with your choices. And you may chose to take others along and the rest of us will ask 'Why?'.
This report was put on the web after the shootings in Kentucky last year. It is an in-depth analysis of where, when and why. The media's predeliction for making a 'crisis' out of everything is pretty well addressed.
No. The PS rating is the maximum sustainable power that can be supplied by that unit. The only way to really know what you are using is to put a power meter on the line and see what current you are drawing. One of the advantages of higher end UPS units is the power meter. I've seen HP boxes that were rated as needing 60 amps (thats around 7KW) humming along with 10 amps. Startup power is of course greater.
For rough estimates, Watts = Volts X Amps. Then you pay by the Kilowatt hour...1000 watts for one hour. There are equations to change watts into cooling load as well. In others words, this 10KW load will need to have xx Tons of cooling capacity to keep it happy.
On "MarketPlace" last night, Robert Reich had a very similar commentary. He delineated the two great forces at work in the world as Technology and Tribalism. And made the same point, that Tribalism almost always can overpower or outlast Technology. It's even true in our own history. The American Revolution was won by our 'tribe' despite the British having better technology.
Granting extra privileges for demonstrated competence is always a good idea. It would also enable you to identify those who are competent enough to help. Maybe publish their names as 'student network techs' or something. This could be really good if you could piggy back it onto some of the required CS lab work, etc.
I like his comments. He, Katz and others are good at devising metaphors and explainations that other groups can use to better understand the world as the 'geeks' see it. That metaphor about carrying the birdcage around is a really powerful one. It could be useful to explain alot of things, technical or not.
Well put! It seems to be almost universally true that those who are most vociferous in their use of free speech, are also those who are most likely to deny others the right to express themselves. Jon does an excellent job expressing himself, and has certainly proven that he does have a thick skin. Many of the flames directed at Jon complain about the length of his articles. Many of the flamers don't seem to be able to rise above petty, one line insults in their attacks, so it is not surprising that they object to a lengthy, thought out essay.
(I"ve done this twice for over a year each time)
