This model makes it much easier for small businesses to grow. Sure, if you take Oracle, or Microsoft, support can be a morass.
But for startups, or smaller business, open source
really helps to get your foot in the door.
I started a Virtual Server Hosting business, http://www.quantact.com/, based on User Mode Linux, and I feel its my customer support that makes the difference. I can focus on that, without having to worry about licensing fees, and I can keep my prices down as well.
