while virtually all free (as in freedom) software is open source, open source software isn't necessarily free (either as in freedom or as in gratis).
There are open source software licences that do explicitely limit what you can do with the software, and that may prevent you from using the software free of charge in certain cases.
I'm not sure about the US but at least in europe, legally 1ko = 1000 bytes (and 1 Mo = 1000000 bytes, ...) since some european "directive".
As a side note, carrots are legally fruits (european directive again)
