  3. Canberra's parliament house on Google Terror Threat · · Score: 2, Insightful

If you are a terrorist you probabaly haven't been waiting for Google to put up maps and show you how the indian parliament house is built or where it is. I am sure any promising terrorist can use basic language skills or a simple map to locate those structures by himself.

It's not like you wake up one day and think to yourself, "Wow, Thanks to Google maps I can locate the foreign department's offices in new Delhi now, I might blow them up".

Austrlalia's parlimant and prime ministers private residency are accesible throught google maps quite easily, but any self discerning terrorist would probably know where these are long before those become available.

What can I say, it sounded simpler in my head...

  5. Lemmings for sale on Capitalizing on Melting Polar Ice · · Score: 2, Insightful

Capitalism on the arctic can be a risky venture. When you bring in companies that are established to deliver on share holders profit, it is hard to guess what kind of a route these companies might take. Without clear laws and regulations limiting how companies exploit this new "gold mine" we might end up with something like the US Patent laws, where large corporations take advantage of the ability to patent anything they can think about. I the arctic scenario this could lead to fishing companies endangering many species, tour companies damaging the habitat of local wildlife, oil exploration polluting the air and water. We must establish clear baselines to prevent this happening! Lemmings look like fat furry hamsters. They have strong legs and claws for digging. Thick fur helps to keep them warm. 6. Re:Bloatware on EC Watching Microsoft Security Moves · · Score: 1

A good software company should set forward to make good software, and build a large satisfied customer base, who are willing to pay for the next release, this makes the company money and is good business practice. Including more security software is just a work-around , getting the software right the first time , or fixing it for the second time is good business practice. Leave the security bit to the people who know security and concentrate on what you are suppose to make - a secure operating system.

First Adobe gets hit with integrated PDF creation in the new version of Word, and now Symantec is on the list of features Microsoft is going to incorporate in the next version of Windows. If there is anything they should have learned by now from the success of Linux, the benefits of allowing specialized developers creating software packages they know, understand and excel in doing properly, should have been clear to Microsoft by now. But I guess that's another thing that Microsoft think they can do better than anything else, what's new?

  8. depends on the customer - no golden rule on Where Do You Shop for Server Components? · · Score: 1

When it comes to purchasing for customers I go to IBM - it doesn't make much difference if they are going to be using office and IE/firefox if the motherboard is a bit faster and the hard drive is ata not a sata. If it's cheaper and works just as well - why bother. When purchasing equipment for a customer I look at what the customer needs and how I can make it work for him the best way. Most of my customers don't need a raid sata interface or firewire or a bigger pipe to the memory on the motherboard, all they want is to be able to call someone when it's broken and get it fixed. I make more money by consulting and building systems, not spending an hour on installing a motherboard. So I'd get the customer a IBM, when he calls me and says its broken, I'll tell IBM it's broken and let them send a technicihan to fix it. What good is it for a customer if he has a the newest fastest sata drive if he has to wait 3 business days for it to get replaced.
