I am an employee of Circuit City in Sterling, VA. I sell these fun things, yay (computer sales are actually going back up, now I can get my new painballgun). Back to the topic.
At Circuit, we have not been informed, in any way, of either modified boxen, or having to charge people for the internet service.
On another note, our store has 28 units (one of them is for me;)) specialordered (backordered). These units have been there for ~1.5 weeks, without recieving any to fill the orders (I guess we aren't so bad off.. our store in Tysons Corner has nearly 50 specialordered).
As many people have suggested, I would recommend getting the unit directly from Netpliance, and canceling the service during either the first or second month, for getting one at Circuit will be a very long wait.
I could swear I had more to write... -Jofo
p.s. Dont try asking for the demo model... although it is a fully working unit onced plugged into an active phone line, the store gets *1* demo-ready unit, and *1* only.. only way to get it I suppose is when the model goes out of program (OOP, the price will drop from $99.99 to $99.96... and I got dibs on the one at the Sterling, VA store:)
