  2. Re:Buran on Space Shuttle Gains Remote-Control Landing Capability · · Score: 2, Interesting

I am not sure that "Buran" means "snow-storm" in russian, despite it was written like that on wikipedia and babelfish.altavista.com also translates it like that.

In Serbian, which is very similar to Russian in may aspects, "Buran" means "something that is like 'bura'" and "bura" is a type of wind that makes the see go mad, makes big waves, ... (not tornado, just a stormy weather). In Russia, "bura" can probably refer to a "snow-storm" as well, but then "buran" means "something that is as wild as a snow-storm".

Not that this makes any difference to the rest of the text. I really don't understand why it is such a news to have a remote-controlled shuttle. Since all the commands on the shuttle are, contrary to the cars without the servo, implemented by the machines, it is only the matter of creating a communication channel with the remote-controller. And the communication from earth to shuttle and vice versa is already implemented and in use for decades. Therefore, implementing the remote control support on the shuttle must be trivial (or almost trivial, since nothing is trivial on shuttle).

Frankly I don't care who's suing them. I hope that many people jump on the bandwagon to sue them. I would like to see them fight it out to the end, instead of taking a settlement. I want a verdict against Microsoft. Something that stops them or other companies from doing things like this in the future. However, most people are only after the money, and hence will just take a settlement. Nobody is in it because they think MS is a bunch of assholes and should pay.

[joke (or not)] There is only one verdict for Micro$oft, and I don't think that any court will make it. We should talk to Al'Quaida (or PLA, IRA, ETA, something like this, although, I would leave PLA out, since they are incapable of doing anything). [/joke]

Btw, did anyone notice a change in Micro$oft's behaviour? A while a go, I ordered Visual Studio 2005 (beta 2) and got it for free on 2-3 DVDs. Now, I am downloading Vista beta2 for x86 and x86_64 for free (with license key, without torrents, directly from Micro$oft). The specification for XPS (PDF-like format) is open and free (ok, it's not GFDL, but they signed some "not-to-sue" agreement).

I believe that we (Serbia) have something like that in the law. As far as I know, everybody has to pay the subscription for the TV and it is payed with electricity. So, if you don't pay for the TV, they cut your power. And, if you don't want to pay for the TV because for example you don't have a TV, or don't want to watch it, you have to call them to "seal" your TV and afterwards you won't get the TV bill with electricity.

The sealing stuff is done by putting some kind of seal instead of the coaxial cable into the TV.

Have you ever read any "Open" document from the ISO? Please do try to do so and you will see that to read that "open" document you have to pay about 100 chf (~ 65 eur or 80 usd).

Of course, you can read most of them by downloading them with your favorite .torrent (or emule) client. It is very likely that nobody will sue you for doing so, but still it doesn't make it legal.

    Free Software if Free Software
Open Source is proprietary name for quasi free software and it is a name made up by proprietary companies in order to destroy the real free software. If you don't believe me, go and ask RMS. He'll be happy to inform you about that.

I do agree that putting ./ in your $PATH and before /usr/bin and /bin is silly. Especially for root account. But I don't see why you are pointing that out so rigorously. The guy just wanted to make an example, and I believe that his example is quite good. Anyway, do you want him to put a real buffer overflow example with, for ex. php-xml which was broken, not so long a go and which is used by most php-based blogs/wikis?

I don't understand what you are saying? High-end users do use RSS. Busy users just don't have time to read all the RSS available, so they summarize it to just a few important ones.

I said that I use RSS every day, but I only use a few RSS sources, such as slashdot, kde and my local news site. I don't want to be overloaded with news, but I do want to be informed. RSS stands for Rich Site Summary, and if you emphasize the word summary, then you realize that there is no point in having too many summaries where there are not that many things happening during the day.

If I do want to get overloaded, for some reason, then I can start aKregator (KDE RSS application) which has much more RSS sources than the Kontact (KDE PIM application) summary page that I regularly read.

I don't agree with you entirely. It is probably true that most of the terrorists (and drug dealers, criminals, etc) will not use plain e-mail, unencrypted phone and similar tech. to describe their plans. But, there are always imbeciles who would do so (see the example below). Therefore, the "No Such Agency" can get some info on terrorist activity through tapping the phones, emails, web-forums and so on. The problem is that they could (or will, or do) also use the tapping for their own things. The most trivial of "own things" would be to spy on their wives to see if they are cheating on them. The not so trivial use of "own things" would be spying on political enemies, for example.

And, as for example on imbeciles who can be tapped efficiently: during the NATO bombing of my country (Serbia), there were NATO rockets in the air that would be activated on radar activity. Therefore, the ground radars could be activated for no more than 10s or so. Although this was quite known amongst the army and amongst all the people, there still were idiots who, for example, got drunk and left their radar for much longer (or forgot to turn it off). I don't have to say what was the result of that drunkenness... Although this example doesn't qualify as terrorist activity (the NATO bombing would be much closer to that), it clearly shows that there are idiots who can be tapped very efficiently.
