  1. Ads - could they ruin everything? on On-line Communities - Ads or no Ads? · · Score: 1

Hi, PullThePlug's management team has thought about using google adsense. The Problem is adsense uses content. as you can see from our website there isnt much content. We get our 10k+ hit's a month from our wargames, downloadable levels, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions? The problem is getting the right ads on the page.. I know alot of programmers dont want to goto our wargames and see ads for CD players and DVD Players. Instead, They would be interested in things like programming magazines? (dr dobbs?) etc. http://www.pulltheplug.org/

True - We have many challenges... Here's a breakdown of our wargames for people who are interested:

http://vortex.labs.pulltheplug.org/ vortex deals with basic exploitation... buffer overflows/fmt strings etc..
http://semtex.labs.pulltheplug.org/ Semtex is for people who want network challenges (not neccessarily exploitation)
http://www.pulltheplug.org/wargames/catalyst/ Reverse Engineering and Binary Analysis - the server is down but you can get the levels via the page.
http://www.pulltheplug.org/wargames/blackhole/ Remote Exploitation - the server is down but you can get the levels via the page
http://blacksun.labs.pulltheplug.org/ our newest wargame - deals with defeating hardened hosts... (PaX etc...)

our IRC network has quite a few people who play the wargames (irc.pulltheplug.org #social)
(ok i'm done with this shameless plug :))

He added the link iirc... pulltheplug has an irc network where you could go to discuss challenges and wargames ( we also have a few new ones ) irc.pulltheplug.org #social list of challenges/wargames

Andrewg does know what he talking about. andrewg has published papers (not on mac security) and is part of some wonderful communities pulltheplug.org and felinemenace.org . I assure you that this machine would of been hacked... with SSH access or not. I think it shows the importance of having patches that minimize possible exposure (i.e grsec/pax etc) that would of decreased the chances of successful exploitation dramatically.... but then again nothing is bullet proof

have you been on that side of the gun?

let me say it's not pretty at all... believe me - here in the US hackers do get whats comming to them. I've seen it happen..

once your busted you lose everything your respect, the respect of family, friends and co-workers. You lose your job you lose your self respect and everything you treasure is taken away....by fbi, lawyers, judges..

now i sit here and read this .... i can tell you now that SOME of these convicted hackers DO feel remorse... and when they are up front with you it's for a reason.... becuase they feel it's time they can be honest about their mistakes and move on...

i've had the door slammed on me quite a few times becuase of my record.... and three years later i'm still unemployed and other's i know are in the same position....

what i did was when i was much younger.... and at this point... It's so discouraging to know that.... there's no more future for me in what i found passionate originally. and i regret what i did...

i'm slowly realizing that... a second chance is very rare and that if given the oppurtunity i'd do anything for it.

and what i can tell younger generation of "hackers" or "crackers" (whichever you prefer) .... the risk may seem worth your time.... but in the end the consequences aren't... and the impact it has on everyone around you isnt.

i'm not much older than i was... but i feel in the last three 1/2 years of being a "convicted" i've matured +10 years..

there's plenty of ways to "test your limits" like the many many wargame's (programming challenges) out there (pulltheplug.com is one).

in conclusion... i dont think i'll ever stop regretting what i've done .. regardless of the knowledge i've obtained.
