Here is a good set of links to a detailed explanation of Netbeans, for the benefit of developers.

You might also find this entry useful for future reference.

  3. Here's that survey you're talking about on The Continuing Hunt for PATRIOT Act Abuses · · Score: 1
It was conducted by the Knight Foundation, and was reported in a lot of US papers, according to Google News.

Here's the KF's Press Release, here's a "12 Key Findings of the survey" booklet, here's a link to the full report, and here's the KF's collection of media reports about their study.

There's lots of other interesting stuff to be found on the Knight Foundation's site too.

Um... (/me counts back the posts) Ah, sorry, I should have called it the "great-grandparent post". :)

    Agreed about nnappe.

Lawrence Lessig is a lot more concise in French too, when he's talking about logiciel gratuit versus logiciel libre.

I guess if the French had won control of the USA in the 18th century from the British, we wouldn't be having this discussion. :)

Or worse still: what if you just stood next to the bean wearing mirror shades? Then you'd owe an even infiniter amount of royalties! So you'll need two lawyers, and then of course a third lawyer to sue the first two for malpractice.

Maybe Chicagoans should organize a mass civil disobedience action, and turn up by the thousands all wearing sequinned jackets and REALLY shiny shoes.

Actually it's gratuit vs libre, not gratis.
But I agree 100% with your point: the grandparent post about "free" confuses freedom with zero financial cost in the word. Can't imagine which boneheads modded him +5 insightful.
There are a lot of MS shills on /. apparently.
