Let's say you have 128MB physical memory installed, here's an easy way to make sure that nothing bad happens: Tell OS you have 256MB available. When that 256th MB is malloc()'d and compression isn't quite doubling the size, page to HD. No performance lost, it would have paged if you didn't have compression anyway. Pointers and everything should work just fine, the same way they do when you page normal RAM to HD.
It's not like doubling the HD, where when you run out of space, you *really* run out of space.
