I'm also quite interested in such a device, the best i have found so far is the Hauppage WinTV PVR USB2, as it actually has a remote, can be run with beyondtv and other good application, and it encodes to Mpeg2 in hardware (at 12mbit, i don't think you would notice), which is a good thing because it reduces CPU utilization and definately helps when recording/timeshifting etc.
The price tag is kinda hefty (i think the MSRP is 199) though.
