    Don't you know that the Oil Companies, Coal Companies, Tobacco Companies, and The Military Industrial Complex all use DHMO?

    That's nothing, I have it on good authority that DHMO has been used for years by the FBI, CIA, MOSSAD and of course the KGB.

    Of course the conspiracy theorists will try to convince you that rampant DHMO usage stretches back to pre-history involving such figures as Leonardo da Vinci and the Templars and will even pull out Biblical quotations or try to convince you that NASA used it on all manned missions.

    When will the madness end?

    Joking side, the healthcare status over on this side of the border is going to erupt pretty soon. So is the unemployment situation, if things don't improve. What the current unemployment numbers don't show is that the roll-up-the-sleeves working class has very high (as high as 30%) numbers right now. The last time it was that bad was great depression. Riots could happen within 18 mos. :-P

    This time round will the rioters be American heroes or Terrorists?

    All of the items you mentioned rely on software, databases or electronics in one form or another. Next.

    Imagine the cost of just analyzing the impact of OSS on federal systems, much less removing it all.

    And here's an interesting point: DHS already uses Apache for dhs.gov, and I'm sure plenty of other government programs use and work on open source platforms, even if their main desktop deployments are Windows.

    NASA, NSA and the military all use and deploy Linux. I'm sure the number of federal systems that embed apache jars is astronomical.

    what happens if you write/contribute to open source?

    As everyone else is pointing out, that makes you a Communist.

    Having said that, I would love to see a world where all the OSS contributors gets added to the "watchlists" of the world and all hell break lose every time there's a geeky conference in California or Florida. A "geeks of the world" vs. homeland security grudge match would be a thing of beauty.

    Errrrrr, survival and preventing Sun from going bust, just off the top of my head?

    Is that really good? I just met someone who now works for Oracle; they worked for a company acquired by Sun prior to the merger. Sun fired all their best SEs because they made good salaries, while there are people all over Sun (or at least, were) making big bucks for doing nothing. UltraSPARC has its uses, but mostly it is an also-ran. Solaris' claim to fame is ZFS. Under Oracle, Solaris is doomed to either fail (as it was heading towards anyway, due to Linux's increasing dominance) or to become an Oracle RDBMS engine, which is much the same thing.

    And that's been true for a decade. I'm surprised they lasted this long.

    It is perfectly normal to pull the product temporarily to re-brand and redirect during an acquisition that is technically interesting but does not completely meet the company vision. Nothing to see here, move along.
