  1. Why should we care? on Linux Passes the Microsoft WGA Test · · Score: -1, Redundant

Was it in fact not a legally acquired copy of Windows? If not, then it's probably news to some, but if so, then it's really nothing to shake a stick about.

  3. Americans will have to work harder to stay fat! on New Climate Change Warning · · Score: 1

With 10 warmer within the next hundred years (on average), people would theoretically either burn more calories trying to stay cool, or stay inside more. The first would actually make the US smaller on average, while the second would probably bulk them up to a new obesity high!

with plenty of resources, I bet they would have a ton of oil, gold, etc. for mining and shipping back to Earth. Of course we'd need some sort of teleportation device to do so cost effectively, but you get my drift.

  6. Re:Umm, guess higher on LokiTorrent vs. MPAA · · Score: 1

Doubtful. When OJ was being tried for his murder, he ran out of money. His lawyers continued to try the case pro-bono because they knew that if they won, they would have 100x more business and settling out of court (hey, if you get OJ off, you'll settle out of court more often) is a lot cheaper than going to court because you can bill more hours. My bet is that they have a lawyer claiming (not the keyword here) that he'll try the entire case for $30,000. My guess is that after the money has gone, the lawyer will duck and run.

I completely agree with this. EULA's are just able to hold a user (and then only if they license the product and leave a trail) liable if that copy ends up on the internet, etc. Am I running a pirated copy of software X? Yes, so therefore I am violating the EULA. Now once they get the USB electrocution set working if they find out you're breaking the law with your computer...that's when I'll pay attention to what they say, but until then, it's all talk...and we all know what they say about talk...

  9. Will this be the rage in 6 months? on LCD Screen for Image Editing · · Score: 5, Interesting

In 2005 we are expected to have flat (just a little thicker than LCDs) CRT monitors. Since the makers are promising that these monitors will be cheaper than their LCD counterparts, wouldn't saavy buyers just wait until then and get a higher (or equal) quality monitor at the same price?

Seems to me like he was a smart guy who just had to come up with an excuse to justify what he was doing. I doubt he was really looking to upload movies to a NASA computer, it doesn't make any sense. If your internet connection is fast enough to get a movie from NASA in a few seconds, then chances are you have enough money to buy a few large harddrives. That kind of bandwidth isn't cheap!

  11. Re:How long before it's cracked? on Labels Trying New CD Copy Prevention Systems · · Score: 1

Well there are a lot of reasons that people pirate things. In my college dorms, there were kids who would have two "skyscrapers" of CD spindles from the floor to the ceiling, all were burned with movies, pieces of software, tv shows, etc. One day I decided to calculate that if the persons cd collection held only enough material to keep him occupied for 10 minutes per cd (which was a gross understatement, since he had all of DBZ on 13 cds which is over 100 hours!), it would take him 40 hours a week for 2 years to handle all of that content. Some people just want to collect, and they don't affect the bottom line. It's people who *only* want to pirate that the companies can "claim" affect their profits, however most of these people wouldn't use the product if they actually had to pay money for it and would fill that void in their life with something else.

  14. Do teachers not understand the meaning of no? on Chimpanzees Shed New Light on Hand Preference · · Score: 1

I am left handed as well, and all of my teachers in the early 80's tried to change my hand as well. I'm just glad I'm stubborn and would yell and sceam and throw my chair at the wall when they did it. Of course I was the one with the problems and the parents were called in for meetings due to my "violent" outbreaks. Of course, had they known the headaches I got from it, they would've understood. So when asked why, and I said it was because they wouldn't let me use my left hand, I could swear my dad grew and turned green for a minute. Let's just say I was able to do whatever I wanted in the future. Being forced to use my right hand felt about as good as I imagine it would be to be molested by a priest.

The reason they should be allowed to do whatever they want has nothing to do with the apartment lease agreements. If the apartments outlawed satallite tv, then everyone with it would rebel. The apartment has NO RIGHT to be in their rooms for ANY REASON other than maintenance, and every time they enter the room/apartment for that reason, a note detailing what was done needs to be left and explained to the residents. The only other reason they can LEGALLY enter is with the police with a warrant. The police come and remove the weed, internet kiddie-porn site host, etc. from the apartment and leave you with a nice note saying come to jail and say hi when you get back. Otherwise, what you do in your apartment is your own business. For those people who still wish to use their 802.11b/g routers, is the apartment giving them the choice to terminate the lease and move elsewhere? No! The apartment is changing the rules after they signed the lease, and they should be grandfathered in. The lease may change next year, but the students who moved in this year should be allowed to do what they want.
