In California some time ago the State subsidized solar heating of water for homes to the tune of $700.
Guess what, a system that used to cost $2,000 subsequently cost $2,700 (i.e. the mfg.'s / installers simply raised the price). Then when the state stopped subsidizing solar conversions they dropped about $700 in price.
What do you thing is going to happen here? You know who the dumb ass is? Senator Stevens, Republican of Alaska, President pro tem of the Senate, the dumb ass who wants $500M for two bridges to nowhere and won't allow that money to re-allocated to New Orleans to fix the Lake Ponchatrain(sp?) cause way.
Somewhere in the mid-90's at an Atlanta Comdex Microsoft had a booth right across from Novell. Microsoft was hawking its wares to replace all the NOS (Network Operating System for those too young) functionality that Novell offered. Literally right across the aisle.
The writing was on the wall!!! It took 7 years before Novell made any move to Linux. As far as I'm concerned if this is the vision inherent in Novell, except for the projects they BOUGHT into, its time for Novell to GO!!!
For all the available open source projects to be downloaded gratis (i.e. free)!!!
Mambo, Joomla, NukePHP,...
Thats it. No other reason than that. Otherwise, C# and Java based solutions are better in every conceivable way. All the yacking about better for reason X, Y, or Z are just that - 'yack'.
Also, the cheaper computers where marketed as hobby boxes or game playing things, so by and large substantive business software was not developed for those platforms.
What, are you like 12 yrs old? Can't remember the 80's? Please calling me a shill doesn't take away from the fact that MS is so dominant. God damn there must be some reason that MS is in the position its in. Cry monopoly all you want but given all the choices to the consumer back then and now... Explain it to me Obe Won. Just kidding.
Also, the GPL is a business model which I have long understood. You on the other hand don't seem to understand what a business model is.
Anyone who is going to be honest will tell you that to implement a Window shop and to implement a Linux shop cost the same when you consider all the factors. Just because you can download GNU/Linux for free doesn't mean you should be "fooled" by the price of the product. Grow up you can't be 12 forever:-)
I thought Amiga's, Apple's, Atari's, Commodore64's and Trash 80's were great, but they were to a degree marketed as a hobby toy or game playing device.
So they got consigned to the trash heap of history.
IMO Microsoft made computing cheap (as in $) well before Linux was a twinkle in Linus' eye. And MS still makes computing cheap relative to all other commercial offerings.
SUN and Apple had the world by the tail in those days (mid 80's), but they never worked to commoditize themselves (despite what they tell you its a good thing). Rather SUN, with its hubris laden leadership thought they were so great that only universities and large conglomerates were entitled use their software and hardware; a fact reflected in their price list. And look were its gotten them... McNeally - "I could've been a contender!"
An argument could even be made that Microsoft with its relatively low priced OS is what made the business model that created Linux. The only way to compete with cheap (as in $) is free (as in beer).
1)Sputnik and the reaction to is a matter of history. Whether you were alive at the time or not.
2)My assertion of what the future holds was just a more interesting tack to take than yours on the story and probably a lot harder to support than your posting.
3)And you do "protest too much." I didn't mean to sound like I was attacking you. When I used the word "you" I meant it in the generic sense.
Geomon how did your first post get rated as insightful? An explanation of that would be truly 'insightful'.
FUD is being used to amp up American interest in the sciences (remember sputnik?). The truth is that the future is going to be one of two outcomes: 1)there is going to be enough resources for all to go around and everything will be just fine or 2) a new nation will arise and not one in the conventional sense.
The politicians of the study believe that American citizens have more in common with each other than with the people of other countries (i.e. tribes). The truth is smart people in Finland and Ireland and China and America have more in common with each other than with their neighbors. SO THIS NEW NATION IS MORE A NATION OF SMART PEOPLE ACROSS THE GLOBE WHO LINK UP VIA THE INTERNET. Lets just hope this new nation is tolerant of the inept and stupid (you never know where they'll list you).
You know what sucks? Slashdot sucks. 3-5 days ago I was looking to buy a new router when I realized that I didn't know whatever happened to the story about the stolen IOS code. So I posted an Ask Slashdot question about it that got rejected. Boo Hoo:)
One thing I didn't realize is that the whole 800Megs of code had been posted on a Russian website.

Ever try to buy a Unix workstation back then?

Simplistic characterization but mostly true.
There is a difference between "working" to be a commodity and being a commodity. And the computer industry is significantly different than soybeans.
My hope is that space travel is "commoditized" before I die.

But is it biodegradable?
