Given the huge popularity of hotmail: isn't it possible that this is an attemp from MS to LOWER the amount of active hotmail users?
Think about it: they recently have started increasing storage space on all free accounts. Due to the huge amount of spam that hotmail accounts usually attract, it doesn't need to be said that they will will need a HUGE amount of extra space, since a lot of users will manage to take full use of that space.
Sure, they'll want you to keep your hotmail/msn adress (for.net and passport functions), but I also think they are now trying to discourage intensive use a bit.
