Teamviewer sound like what your asking. It is free for home use and handles portforwarding and encryption. The newer versions however do not play nice on Mac and Linux. Version 3.5.4437 however runs on WINE and OS X Intel.
I've set up a small web-page with a picture-guide to downloading and running it, I then direct people there and we are up and running within a few minutes.
