As the other posts say, its endurance, fuel conservation, reduced noise and logistics. And coz of all these reasons it has a credible second strike capability...thats the most important thing about a SSBN. Nulcear powered ballistic missiles than can wipe out the earth several times. Yet, they are quite, submerged and humming along some where in the deep ocean.
The newer versions of diesel subs with AIP (like Agostas, Scorpene) can also submerge for a long time, but still a SSBN is a formidable weapon system than anything that moves under water.
