It's a popular milestone in itself that O'Reilly is putting this book out (O'Reilly Media is the largest independent publisher of technology books) and that the material is being introduced at the first Second Life Community Convention side-by-side with State of Play at the New York Law School--two events seriously considering the emergence of the global metaverse/social 3D Web.
O'Reilly MAKE magazine editor Philip Torrone has already casually commented that MAKE is thinking of putting out some SL How Tos. Now I'm totally looking forward to something like the O'Reilly Metaverse Developers Conference =D. That's got to be on its way sometime, with an eye to Web 3.0;-).
The Bedazzle design team who are hosting the first Salon on their sim asked us to cap the RSVPs at 50 (a pretty good number) so they can handle the load (note: there are still spaces open). Another group that's doing the audio server is using Skype to stream speeches from the three presenters into SL while attendees use chat and IM. He's worked out the kinks in streaming audio and doesn't foresee problems with an audience this size, though anything's possible, especially the first time. But hey, it's an adventure:-)
For Salons in the months ahead we'll look to push live video, audio, and attendee chat feeds from SL out onto the Web. That way we can have attendees and participants who aren't even logged in, potentially numbering in the thousands.
