"Now please, list for me, the free software OS distributions that are provided with security fixes for 10-12 years after release?"
Don't be silly. With open source software, you can write your own security fixes! (Granted that you have time to learn whatever-the-fuck language that the code was written in. And have all the libraries. And are familiar with those libaries. Oh, and can find the code somewhere because you probably don't have it.)
First of all, Wordpad in Windows 7 DOES have support for ODF. Second, an OS doesn't support any document formats...word processors do. Need to learn you the difference between the OS and applications.
No, it's like having the 32 bit libs installed in 64 bit Linux. 32 bit apps work just fine in 64 bit Windows. I've been using 64 bit Vista for a few weeks now and I haven't had trouble installing anything. The main difference, really, is that 64 bit apps get installed in C:/Program Files and 32 bit apps get installed in C:/Progam Files (x86).
I don't know about XP 64, but I just got this laptop and it came with Vista 64 bit. Works marvelously (though I can't wait for my Windows 7 disk to get here). Haven't run into a single compatibility issue yet.
Why in the world would you use PAE when you can just get a 64 bit OS? I don't think PAE is really being used to differentiate between client and server when both have gone 64 bit.
"Sorry, you can either define science as "no supernatural", or assert that science is 100% accurate and try to use science to show that there is no supernatural, but you can't do both."
Why not? That assertion doesn't make much sense to me.
The point of having men's sports and women's sports is because it is fair competition. The fact of the matter is that the fastest woman will never be as fast as the fastest man...its simple biology. Male and female bodies are built differently.
That said, it's not fair for a woman with a genetic abnormality that gives her to the build of a man and allows her to set records that are unbeatable by women without the abnormality.
Yes, it's sad that she has the genetic issue, but life isn't rainbows and unicorns.
The International Association of Athletics Federation is not a government organization (as in the government of a state), and they can require anyone to do whatever they want IF that person wants to prove their eligibility for a medal. This isn't big brother garbage...RTFA next time.
>Here you have just given away that you start with the philosophical assumption of naturalism: that is, everything that is (or everything that affects the universe) happens inside the universe.
It's not a "philosophical assumption", it's a scientific assumption based on a lack of evidence to assume otherwise. For example, one might assume that unicorns, fairies, and goblins do not exist either. That is not a philosophical assumption...we simply have no evidence to assume that they do exist.
I'd agree, except he lives in an apartment and the person coming in said "maintenance" and had a key. Most apartments have language in the rental agreement that allows for maintenance personnel to enter as needed.
"The company didn't fire him, and the DA declined to press charges."
And yet you still think that everything went down just like the "victim" said? There's a lot missing to this story, as people who assault other people for no reason and are supposedly caught in the act by a policeman aren't often just let go.
No, I can't fix it. I don't have time to learn C or whatever programming / scripting language that they've built the program in. I also don't care beg some volunteer programmer somewhere to fix it for me. At least with Microsoft, there are clear support channels to go through when something needs fixed. Also, the guys who design the UI generally are not the same guys who did the programming. This is important, because many OSS apps work well, but the UI sucks ass.
I had three years of the Linux desktop before getting tired of the other Linux users and went back to Windows. Linux is a good OS, but the proponents can be rather rabid.
PRO TIP: OpenOffice can open DOCX files.

What would they look into? Versioning is arbitrary. You sense making are not.
"DRM actively attempts to prevent a user from exercising their legal rights."
NEWFLASH: CopyRIGHT holders have rights too! DRM is an attemp to balance the rights of users with the rights of copyright holders.
"Granted, DRM appears to be a failure,"
DRM a failure? Only if it's not done right. When it is done well, it's successful.
Valve's Steam: Great success
Zune Pass: Great success
Napter Subscription: Great success
Netflix: Great success
Kindle: Great success
Probably 90% of the time most people aren't even going to notice that their stuff has any DRM because it works just fine.

What the hell is a Windows "distribution"? This isn't Linux.
Oh, I get it now. If you exclude the supernatural from science, how can you then use science to disprove it? Got it.

Nevermind. I misread.
No one suggested nuclear planes:
"They can use nuclear power on an aircraft carrier to power the conversion"
"I understand the desire to protect individuals from slander and libel on the net."
But anonymous slander and libel were what the internets were invented for!

Well, I wish the three of you the best.
"Mac OSX just works. Linux just works. Windows is a friggin nightmare of spyware, viruses, instability and bugs, which doesn't always work."
I need a little help...what are the respective market shares of those OS's you just mentioned?
I had three years of the Linux desktop before getting tired of the other Linux users and went back to Windows. Linux is a good OS, but the proponents can be rather rabid.
How many XP upgraders are there really going to be? I think this is a small issue.
