American fear mongering is killing american research. Traditionally America has embraced emigrants from other countries seeking 'liberty' in the USA.

It would be naive to believe that the USA always embraced emigrants. Though the current political situation in the USA dicourages sharing of information that is desirable in an International Academic community... it is also making it more difficult for students to study in the USA.

    But why should I care?

Oh, and I don't think we should patent anything anyhow... the only winners with patenting are the lawyers. If a company doesn't want to pay loyalties to some company in China, then don't try and patent it.. then they won't realise its worth patenting and won't realise you are making a patent infringement.

    1. It is possible to build faster applications using a language that compiles to native/is not interpreted. Though Java is not much slower (if slower) than other languages when implemented with this in mind. For a really slow technology try microsoft distributed queries.

    2. It is possible to build very slow .NET applications. And all technologies are only secure as the code that was developed and the architecture that they are run on. You don't have to run .NET on windows, try it with mono.net with a LAMP(ish) server build.

I disagree, the internet has always travelled via telephone wires. The fact that it doesn't have to and often doesn't is irrelevant, as the internet still travels the same mediums as telephones. So I agree, the internet has always been and always will be grey area and difficult to define. As for the chatroom, it is also difficult to define accurately and without ambiguity. For example, I would say that IM isn't a chatroom... although it is possible to add more than one other person to a conversation... so at what point would it become a chatroom? I would also claim that message boards are not chatrooms... though it is clear that a chatroom is a chatroom... but what about everything else involving messaging on the internet.. or intranet? So I think its all pretty similar to being around people that use drugs... If you don't regulate yourself I guess you have a much better chance of getting real punishment.

I have worked on sites where people that can install whatever they like, still play those boring windows games... ...I offered them something more interesting to play, but they felt playing something more interesting would look less professional and they actually seemed to like playing solitaire! ...I guess it does look more professional than playing doom or quake or halflife or whatever else... but developers are expected to have a healthy interest any such games anyway... other business employees aren't stereotyped as big geeky kids i guess?

Java Script almost always interprets everything as a string, unless it is clear that it should not be interpreted this way. I imagine that it is most likely that the JS engine you were using first tried concatenating 2 to "16" before multiplying the rest of your equation. typing is useful especially with large projects, however I feel that the developers themselves should take the time to understand the environment they are using.... weakly typed languages are not an excuse for lazy programming.

I am on a project in an organisation where the admins try and prevent us from using anything but IE!! I have permission to install programs, but they have locked down the IE properties so I can't see where the proxy server is... ... I don't really think that it is worth finding it, since I am representing my company on their site and the process of discovering how to access their proxy might be considered malicious... but when I pointed out that I couldn't use Firefox, I was informed that their hiding of properties was working! I was dismayed to be working for a client whose IT Team thought blocking out alternative browsers to IE was a good thing... but I guess Admins come in all flavours... much like developers that like working on Windows OS I guess...
