I believe that the Linux port is being worked on, and is going to be available in the first half of 2005. Second Life currently works under WineX (at least, that's what I've read -- seen some screenshots, but, never tried it myself.)
If you already have an SL account, try looking at the SL forums (forums.secondlife.com) and look for some posts about SL being used under WineX. You may even want to start one yourself.
If you don't have an account with SL, you can get a 14 day trial through www.mmorpg.com.
No, not really. The Sims (and the Sims 2) aren't online, nor massively multiplayer. Second Life is an online "place", a virtual world -- a metaverse. Very "Snow Crash"-ish. It's kind of hard to define...you should just try it out yourself.:)
How do you feel about current virtual worlds?

There are a few virtual worlds right now, which are trying to become the "metaverse". The two well-known ones are Second Life (www.secondlife.com) and There (www.there.com). Have you tried either of them, and if so, which one do you think does a better job?

Also, IGE.com sells Linden Dollars, as well as GamingOpenMarket.com :)
