What if the grid/barcodes/whatever were painted on the ceiling instead? Just place the sensors on the top of the forklift - just have to make sure they'd still be able to see whatever they're looking for at that distance (since the distance from the forklift to the ceiling is much greater than from the tires to the floor, obviously).
This would prevent the grid/barcodes from wearing down at all.

true, there are PhDs in the broad field of "health," but none, at least to my knowledge, which carry an 'obligation to help people' (a la the Hippocratic Oath)... although I wouldn't mind seeing similar oaths instituted as part of getting any PhD - i.e. to use the knowledge you have accumulated to the most good possible.
although, on the other hand, it's also fun to use learning for evil...:)

it sounds like you're talking about an MD, not a PhD... sorry to ruin your crushingly witty/. comment.
I don't know about anybody else, but I watch tv while I'm on the computer. My room mate and I watch tv in our room while we're sitting in front of our computers doing stuff online. So I get my recommended daily dosage of television every day right alongside my chronic internet usage.
Hooray for multitasking! And hooray for being a college kid with little better to do than watch tv and be online at the same time.
