A non-programming friend downloaded Swift Playgrounds app on his iPad to learn Swift programming. Not sure why it introduced him to nested functions right off the bat. Anyway, he's frustrated because his code doesn't work and he wants someone else — probably me — to figure out why. I told him if he wanted to be a real programmer he needed to debug his own code before asking someone for help.
One of the affected passengers was Michael Cohen, who is Donald Trump's lawyer, who tweeted that Uber was "taking total advantage of chaos and surcharging passengers 1.4 to 1.8 times."
A lawyer complaining about being shafted? How ironic...
[...] any kids without access to Apple products are treated like shit.
This is so true. I found in the 7th grade in 1983 that I came from a "poor" family because we didn't have an Apple ][ computer to do my homework and cable TV to watch MTV. My childhood was ruined. Damn Apple!
It's your neighbor's property; they should be able to erect a 30ft statue of Buddha if they want to.
If your 30-foot statue of Buddha overshadows my backyard victory garden, it wouldn't take much to convince a court that you're interfering with the enjoyment of my backyard. That was a common complaint about satellite dishes back then.
We (used to) have many rights in the USA, but the right not to be offended isn't one of them.
You must not be from California. My roommates and I rented a duplex apartment with a front yard. One day a little old lady told us that the dead petunias in our front yard caused the value of her house down the street to drop by $25K. I asked her if she was selling her house. She said no. I told her she doesn't know the true value of her house until she sells it. She walked away in a huff.
Is where the crew go back in time to accidentally mess up the JFK assassination, and, in order to reset the timeline, they take an older, more jaded and washed out JFK to assassinate himself.
Alternative fictional JFK assassins would include the Smoking Man from The X-Files and the Comedian in The Watchmen.
Nearly 15 years later people are still complaining about SOX?
When I started in help desk in 2005, SOX compliance was my bread-and-butter for several years. The only time I come across SOX compliance issues these days is when I'm interviewing at a company planning to go public.
My nephew got a job at one of these mortgage lenders that put him in the middle of the pipeline to move mortgages off the books. Made good money. He paid more in taxes than his father made in a year ($50,000). Bought one house, flipped it. Bought two more houses to flip but he lost his job and had to do short sales. He had a good accountant who helped him narrowly avoid bankruptcy and stay out of trouble with the IRS.
I had to file for bankruptcy in 2011. My attorney advised me to switch my accounts away from Wells Fargo Bank as they would freeze my accounts once they get the bankruptcy notification. Just so happened that a credit union opened next door to the branch I went to as WFB started this product upselling campaign. Switching to a credit union was the best financial move I ever made.
That has been true for "dumb robots", but as AI progresses even highly skilled jobs can feel the pinch.
I've been hearing that since the 1970's. Like the Great Earthquake that supposed to send California into the ocean, I've been waiting for that one too.
I must be the exception to the rule. I was unemployed for two years (2009-10) when I was 40 and 41, underemployed for six months (working 20 hours per month) and filed for Chapter Seven bankruptcy when I was 42, and, now that I'm 47, I've been working for the last five years. Since I'm working in government IT, I could continue working along with the rest of the old farts in IT who are pushing 75.
I wonder if the OS gets too heavy for the hardware or it's an intentional thing
The iPad 2 came out in 2011. I had mine for four years now. Based on my experience with the iPod Touch (1st gen) that I had for eight years, the iOS got heavy with added features over the years. After developers stop releasing apps for the last supported iOS version, my devices become single-purpose devices (i.e., Touch became a Kindle reader, iPad 2 is an alarm clock). The iPhone 6s is my current iOS device.
The latest and greatest from Apple is no longer updates my venerable iPad 2. I wished I could downgrade to an earlier version. Recent versions of iOS had made the iPad 2 slower in execution and the web browser crashes all the time. Not that it matters. I use my iPad 2 as an alarm clock with an app that has an air raid siren to go off at 4:30AM each morning.

My solution to this problem is to convert dynamic websites to static websites. Script kiddies hate static websites as there is nothing to hack into.

Emacs and VIM got updates. I'm waiting for Microsoft to update Edit.
Found the helpdesk guy.
Former help desk guy. I now do computer security. Still consoling hurt computers, fixing broken users, and staying out of office politics.

If you want to teach kids so they can get a job, any vocational trade will do.
FTFY - We need more plumbers, electricians, and carpenters.

Because all three were rote tasks and required zero creativity.
Help desk requires a significant amount of creativity when it comes to consoling hurt computers, fixing broken users and avoiding office politics.
Or, people would like to be able to own homes in areas unblighted by rooftop antenna towers.
You must have missed the early satellite TV/Internet day where some neighbor had a satellite dish that took up most of the backyard.

It could have been yuge!

You're one of the guys on here always praising capitalism and shitting on the poor folks but you filed bankruptcy?
Nope. I'm just a citizen who exercised his constitutional right to file for bankruptcy.
Slashdot... Where else would so many confessed wankers would hang out?

Unemployed at 40 = suicide

That's exactly how I picture all those retired baby boomers in 2030.
I wonder what the AI would think of Doom as the monsters hide behind secret wall panels and jump out from behind to attack?

How about, say, Justin Bieber?
Eww....
The Shat sells Commodore equipment, not Apple.
That could explain why my parents got me the Commodore VIC-20.
