No, not Byte - COMPUTE!..with all it's program listings that you had to spend an evening or more typing in. To this day I believe that's what gave me the patience to be the code warrior that I am today;-)
I have lots of fond memories of that magazine and its sibling "Compute's Gazette".
Good points. This is not unlike what Microsoft is doing with their Windows Media Center version of XP. I found out the hard way that my hardware, which happily ran MythTv, crashed and burned under MCE.
Microsoft has set the bar very high in terms of hardware requirements.
Anybody else cringe when Cloe and Edgar go to work on the set of Twenty Four? These guys need serious tech consulting.
I love that show but hate when they start babbling about encryption keys, routers, and "pass codes" while expecting the audience to believe they're all somehow related to the task at hand.
People are complaining about having to convert their MP3s in order to get them into the Sony device. Apple's iPod Photo makes you do the same thing whenever you want to load your photos on the device. Why isn't anyone complaining about this??
Not true. Large companies who feel the need to have someone they can call and scream at when they need help with a piece of software rely on support sellers. That's why most of them typically shun "free" software, but will consider open source when there's a company around like Red Hat. Support Sellers become the person on the other end of the line who can help the company work through its issues.
I wonder if there'll be support for Windows Media Center Edition? That would be awesome!

One of the many business models is "Support Seller" in which you sell consulting services around an open source product. See Red Hat.
