"The problem? While Apple and Verizon stores would have it, Wal-Mart, Best Buy and other Verizon distributors could have been left out."
It surprises me that Apple would want to keep these two box giants from carrying the iPhone. I am sure they sell a very large amount of iPods currently.
You need to read Huxley's Brave New World and then we'll see if you have the same opinion. It sounds like this is the type of world you are shooting for. Society will always have its racist, religious fanatics, and rejects, but they are the minority. (Someone please tell the popular press that) If we keep making laws like this the government should just take all children at birth and raise them to be mindless obedient drones. Obviously they don't think parents who were shaped by their society in the first can raise their own children anymore.
What worries me about this weapon is the possibility of the technology being stolen/captured by the enemy. If an enemy were to capture such a device what would stop their scientist from making a version that does much more than make you feel uncomfortable. It's quite possible considering the thing is strapped on top of a hummer. It's not like an enemy has never captured a military vehicle. Imagine an enemy strapping one of these to a helicopter and flying over a large city with the "juice" turn up to deep fry. What's going to stop a country like Russia from making their own version and selling it to countries that aren't considered too friendly to us western world citizens. I hope the US is prepared to keep tight grips on this technology.
I don't know if HP has sold a million+ PCs in one sale, but they do a lot of similar charitable work like this. They are pretty giving in comparison to many other corporate giants.
"Anyway, looking forward to Steve Job's keynote this week at MacWorld. Hopefully he will introduce something from totally out left field and blow us all away."
My guess is just the video version of an iPod. Amazing we are debating high-resolution TV and DVD but Apple thinks consumers want to watch TV shows on a 2 inch screen. I will give Apple the win here; I almost guarantee video iPods will outsell HD-DVD for a long time to come. As for something out of left field that blows us away they could introduce and great new server or networking technology...oh wait...we are talking about Apple. They could introduce a great new system or software that could save businesses thousands of dollars...oh wait once again...Apple doesn't do that either. I think your left field this year from Apple is a fancier version of iTunes, and an iPod that plays video and comes in 15 pastel colors. Apple doesn't invent anymore, they just find a way to make exisitng technology look good, and market it into the mainstream.

For home users maybe a few.....for corporations none.
