I seem remember reading or hearing somewhere that windows were fairly IR opaque. (Maybe it was Mythbusters?) Anyway, if that's the case, you just need to stay inside and watch your keyboard like a hawk to prevent people spying on you...
If you're running Linux and EAC in WINE isn't an option (either not trusting the emulation or just doesn't work) but you want some of the nice features (rip multiple times to check for undetected read errors, etc), try rubyripper. It's worked very well for me.
I'm fairly sure that you're legally allowed to photograph/film inside a mall, but the mall owners/security are legally allowed to make you stop/kick you out for doing so.
Actually, what annoys me more is that I have to pay to receive text messages (at least in the USA). I'm fine* with the wireless carries charging what the market can bear for sending messages, but I feel that text messaging should operate similarly to long distance - the initiator (caller/sender) pays the fee.
* Not really. I think the pricing ridiculous, but can't really fault them for charging what people will pay.
