It's good to see this type of trend in the tech market. Slow and steady is the way I would like to see it go, because sharp hills are almost always followed by sharp valleys. And I would certainly hate to see what few jobs that are opening up all be gone within two years time......again.
While I don't like to post "me too" replys, I think he said it all with:
"Is BitTorrent dead? No, it will never die. Just as FTP for Warez dwindled and other transfer services took over (IRC, Napster, Kazaa, BitTorrent, foo) it didn't kill it.
There are enough tech savvy people out there that WANT to be able to "share" files that this will never die. They could make crazy prison sentences like 25 years for sharing a movie or something like that and I don't think it would ever stop. Look at the government's "War on Drugs". What a load of crap that turned out to be. There are some people who are in prison longer than convicted murderers for possesion. My point is that I don't think making it illegal and shutting down established channels of delivery will stop the problem, just stunt it at best.
It seems to me that you're thinking about people that perform regular upkeep on their computer. People like this probably don't need any whitehats "helping" them. But I would dare say that the majority of people that use the internet could benefit from such worms, because zombie comps aren't helping any of us.
An analogy: I know absolutetly nothing about cars. As a matter of fact, I don't even check my oil or tire pressure. I let everything having to do with upkeep go unnatended. While I'm sure that that there are many motorheads out there that would hate the idea of something that would come along and do all of these things for them. Me (and many other people) being a novice when it comes to the inner workings of a car would LOVE to have this type of service. And for FREE?! I think that there is much more benefit to be had for the computer communtiy with a whiteworm than negative.
Please excuse any spelling errors because I'm here at work and don't have access to a program with spellcheck, nor do I have time to proof read with dictionary.com. Thanks for taking the time to listen!
If the filesharers believe they are some sort of civil disobedient vigilanties, then let them continue to file share.
I don't think I'm any sort of vigilante, and I think that's what this is all about. I don't think that I'm liberating IP or anything silly like that, but I don't believe that I'm doing anything illegal. If a movie is good, I buy it on DVD. If a CD is good, then I'll support that artist. But to make me sit through a movie/CD that I've payed for and not give me a refund when it's horrible is wrong in my opinion. I'm not saying that there aren't people out there that download and then never support the artists that deserve it, but many people I know downlad media to see if it's worth purchasing. And in my opinion there are very few artists putting out anything worth my money.
I was a suprnova user and was sad to see them go. While it doesn't seem to be a popular opinion around here I support the torrent sites. I don't care to get into the ethics of the whole thing, but I'm glad to see someone putting up a figth for what they believe in.
Maybe it went back into R&D to make it cheaper down the line?
