In fact, BT did this a LONG time ago. Three years ago, in 2003, so you can't say NIN was original. He posted different versions of the track "Force of Gravity" and allowed fans/wannabe DJs to remix them as they pleased.
Of course, BT isn't nearly as famous as NIN or Peter Gabriel, so this didn't garner quite the publicity they have with their stunts. Unfortunate, because the man is talented.
