BTW: Thomas Jefferson tried to cooperate with the French in setting up a common set of units, in close correspondence with the British at the time. The agreements were scuttled when the French chose to go it alone, for some pretty obscure reasons of internal politics. Describing the SI (it's not called Metric) system as French is historically accurate.
