I haven't noticed a stigma with the several girls here at work. I have however noticed that if any one of them ever runs into a problem in their code or admining in general, they generally have half a dozen guys fighting to give them a hand ;-)

Which can very often be exactly the problem. Many girls in IT have a disadvantage because they have not had as much chance to solve problems independently. Helplessness is a habit that is very easy to acquire but can be very harmful in the long run.

It wouldn't be the first time when slashdot editors' actions go directly against their high-horse stance against censorship and try to hide any views that they personally don't like.
I would like to remind Michael that you only support free speech if you support your enemies' rights to say things that you don't like and hope that you prove me wrong.

I assume you're referring to Kevin Mitnick's case where he was refused a phone call. This one actually made some sense from the law-enforcement point of view. We just need to pretend we are the police and start with the assumption that Kevin is indeed a powerful hacker-terrorist committed to causing death and destruction. Now what would a hacker-terrorist do for a contingency plan? He would set up his most devastating hacking scripts and make them activatable by a modem listening on a dedicated phone line. And all you need to launch the attack is a phone call to a specific number. Of course, Kevin was actually a pretty different character but the authorities didn't really have any way of verifying that this was the case.

Job growth/loss graph under different presidents
    Missing jobs under Bush administration
    So
    - job loss=OK
    - alienating the world=OK
    - job loss to undo some alienation of the world=not OK
    Lovely logic.
