I work for a company that is very sales focused, and I admit, at times it is very frustrating and the deadlines seem impossible.
However, I know for a fact that a lot of the projects i have worked on bring in over $1M in revenue to the company a year (per client). And a lot of the clients want to have the software in a given timeframe. We as developers are challenged to meet the dates set forth by the client - which for the most part are totally insane.
I know this may not apply to the gaming industry, but it surely does in my line of work. It sucks, but I work the hours so our company makes money (as opposed to our competitors)... so I continue to get my paycheck.
I was in a social fraternity and participated in both social activities (i.e. getting wasted and making out w/ females) as well as slashdot type activities (i.e. playing Unreal Tournament). Most of my fraternity brothers were CS or IS majors, so I was able to enjoy the social benefits of a fraternity AND still play LAN games at the house whenever I wanted too... I wish I was back in skewl.
"often expressed by the metaphor of the "Divine Watchmaker" who created a mechanism so perfect as to be self-regulating."
Great metaphor, but I would change the second half to read "who created a mechanism so flawed that he just stopped caring"
