This is what works for me. Control-Click on the IE Window, Terminal, etc icon in the dock and you see a list of all of the open windows that the application is running. Right now I can see the window that I am posting in and the original window that contained the link to it. Opening this new window required one click by simply holding down the Apple button while clicking on the link instead of the usual two clicks required in Windows/Linux (right click on link (1) then click on open new window(2). My point is not specifically that my desktop OS of choice is better worse than anyone elses simply that a lot of the shortcuts and power user tricks need to be learned for your OS.

In addition, using the dock or alt-tab to switch applications only switches applications not windows. Look at IE or Terminal.app - ....... I can hear you saying right now that this isn't a big deal. It is a HUGE deal

Just curious then about the implications that this has for things such as modems? At present I have a detached office 60 feet from my house. Power, telco, and ethernet are all run in PVC Conduit 24" in the ground, 2 tubes. Nothing is exposed. Both ends are protected with APC Surge Protectors (Telco and ethernet). Lightning strikes hitting houses are not common here (Vermont). Lightning taking out modems is guaranteed eventually. I guees what I wonder is why the Cat 5 Ethernet running to my office is any more vulnerable than the Cat 5 Telco which is copper for 1.5 miles to the CO?

Couldn't one just have good quality surge protectors on both ends, ie APC, etc?

I too am looking at this route for effective, fast, and cheap backup. The advantage to tape is its easy portability but when you think about it this can be achieved easilly with IDE Drives located on another dedicated backup server "offsite". To be really safe you could create a RAID Array on the backup to counter the inevitable hardware failure. What is offsite anyway; is it another room, building, city, etc.

Although this requires high speed connectons a setup of your main server in EST Time Zone and a backup server located in the PST Time Zone would be perfectly feasable and safe.

I have got to say this!! Where do you think that the educational foundation that allows most (read not the few and privilaged) of us to have the opportunity to be in the computer industry comes from? To me the public/private education debate is as simple as the Micro$oft/Open Source debate.
