I'm in my last year before becoming a Chemical Engineer, and I'm specializing in polymers but I have taken an interest in CS also (mostly as a hobby). I'm ok about learning a programming language by myself... but some pointers as to which language is best wouldn't hurt me.
What do scientists or engineers use when they want to simulate a reactor? How about design of equipment? Does everyone use Excel and Macros/Solver? Or Aspen???
Today I handed in a paper which did the design and pricing of a distillation column separating a water-acetic acid mixture. I refused to do it in Fortran, didn't know if OO2 has something like 'solver' in it, don't know much about Matlab (and don't want to be tied to working only at school in order to use it, and I don't like the idea of 'stealing' it), so I turned to Excel.
The 'program' turned out to work great, but I still feel like it's a bit n00b-ish. Any fellow ChemEngs that wouldn't mind sharing $0.02?
It is all a matter of choice. The bug chooses to fight.

Your life is the sum of a remainder of an unbalanced equation inherent to the programming of the matrix. You are the eventuality of an anomaly, which despite my sincerest efforts I have been unable to eliminate from what is otherwise a harmony of mathematical precision. While it remains a burden to sedulously avoid it, it is not unexpected, and thus not beyond a measure of control. Which has led you, inexorably, here.

Ha, indeed... but then again, this was one of the first math riddles that made others think twice before answering. The mistake of the previous 'mathematicians' was that they thought that the infinite sum of a decreasing number had to be equal to infinite.
I really like proving wrong Zeno, in this 'riddle'.
A 100 metre race has been arranged between Achilles and the tortoise. Of course Achilles can run much faster than the tortoise, so Achilles feels pretty confident of an easy victory. He therefore decides to make the race a little more interesting by giving the tortoise a 10 metre head start. Most of the spectators are sure that Achilles can easily make up the 10 metre deficit and they place bets on Achilles to win. The wise old Zeno, however, decides to bet on the tortoise. Zeno reasons as follows: The first thing Achilles must do is to run to the tortoise's starting position. But while Achilles is doing that, the tortoise, although slow, will move on to a new position. Next, Achilles must run to the tortoise's new position, but once again, while Achilles is doing that, the tortoise will move on a little further and so on and so on. No matter how small the gap between them is, while Achilles is closing the gap the tortoise is able to make a new gap. Zeno concludes that no matter how fast Achilles runs, he can never catch, let alone pass, the tortoise. Since Achilles can't pass the tortoise, so long as the tortoise keeps moving, the tortoise will win the race.
What do think about Zeno's reasoning?
Quote from here
Solution:
Since we want to prove Zeno wrong, we must assume that Achilles will catch up to the turtle at some time, or at some point.
Say Achilles runs at 10 m/s. The turtle at 1 m/s. The distance at which Achilles will catch the turtle is X.
Say that one second passes, then The turtle will be at 10 + 1 = 11 metres.
And Achilles will be at 0 + 10 = 10 metres.
Then one tenth of a second passes. The turtle is now at 11 + 0.1 = 11.1 metres.
Achilles, therefore will be at 11 metres.
... lather, rinse, repeat.
Adding up all the distances for Achilles would look something like this:
Tom, I'm standing in South Park, Colorado, where the rock band Moop has refused to play. The strike started yesterday and could well into next week.
...
Tom, we're now entering the second day of the rock band Moop's refusal to play, and the second day of absolutely no other news to report on. In a recent poll we asked people if Moop's refusal to play would stop them from downloading music off the internet. One person said yes, two persons said no. And 97 persons said 'Who the hell is Moop?'
Then again, I think that by not buying, and having all radio stations to stop broadcasting music a strong argument might be made against the RIAA.
I guess this is just a case in which the RIAA has become a big,... Big, BIG-ass leech. It's sad that because the artists have become tech-unaware (or ignorant) they can't stand up for themselves and avoid getting robbed by their contractors.
The Artists should publish their recordings, and set up a PayPal account to receive donations. We could cut off that way most of the recording company's revenues and still get the cash to our favorite bands.
Ha, indeed. I care a lot about my stats, always tried to have a 2+ ratio 'just in case'. Perhaps there should be a workaround as in having the clients to periodically report their progress in uploading.
Well, I dunno. As you say, it could be used to predict wether two songs are related or not...
At last we would know the real nature of "Ice Ice Baby" =D
forgotten link...
Thanks for the info. I'll be sure to check it out.
