Umm, its really not that far out. Neural networks, while a gross simplification and exponentially smaller in size are essentially tiny brain like pattern recognizers. In theory we could build something as powerful as a brain today if we had the raw processing power available. Then again I'm not anywhere near an expert in the field so I could be grossly incorrect.

BeOS _was_ challenging Windows for a while. Many mainstream hardware and software developers were expressing interest and actively developing for BeOS for a while. Unfortunately the infamous focus change and Microsoft licencing bastardry helped Be Inc. to an early end.

While there is quite a large number of GNU apps included in all BeOS, IIRC they arent needed at all for everyday use. In fact, users are not encouraged to ever really use them. Of course if you're a developer you really have no choice with GCC/etc.

Obviously 2k3 is a lot more difficult for your novice to run, but if you're an enthusiast you're not going to have a hard time enabling features you need, while not having to spend the extra hours disabling all the extraneous crap inherent in windows releases.

Moving bots to a different network is identical to switching web servers.
