  3. The Future is hard to tell, but... on Vivendi To Acquire MP3.com · · Score: 1

Yes, it is sad that the indy-artist part of mp3.com is likely to go, for reasons listed in other comments, BUT, I don't think that this is the end of free music online. For the last years we have seemingly gone from

"the net is amazing and everyone and his dog can have a website, all free"

    to

"hosting costs bucks you know, and the death of the net is inevetable"

Well, tech changes rapidly and with Freenet and similar techniques (the rest of the p2p stuff) everyone CAN offer music to others. The distributed nature of it all (popular files, no matter size, only needs downloading from the originating node ONCE) means that big servers no longer are needed for the music. Yeah, i know mp3.com is/was more than a mere ftp-site, and that Freenet will not allow you to monitor the number of downloads, but my point is that technology often makes unexpected changes. We dont know there the net is headed. I bet someone is working on some totally distributed thing right now...

A question for you Ian (if it is you... ^_^):

A new node every 3 minutes? How do you know that, considering the structure of the Freenet protocol? Is there a way of analysing the network, or are you just reading the node-list at octayne? If so, how many nodes are currently in operation?

  8. Re:Right course of action on MPAA Goes After Gnutella · · Score: 1

    I actually doubt this possibillity:
Data which is not requested enough will "fall out" of the nodes used to host it, and unless at least SOMEONE requests it, it will never leave the originating node. Falsly labeled data has not been a (major) problem with other P2P-systemsm, has it? If there are not more "saboteurs" than normal users, the data inserted by normal users will not be overwhelemed by the "fake" data. IAMAFD (i am not a freenet developer) though, so you should read available info on the Freenet architecture yourself. I beleive Ian Clarke answerd the quetion regarding "data poisoning" i an earlier interview (on /. i think).

The Freenet systems are far from complete, BUT THEY ARE GETTING THERE. It is already fully possible to publish a "web"site in a "subspace". Seaching is also in the works, and so is mail, BBSes and other stuff. Graphical clients are being worked on, and non-Java libraries as well.

And as to "up and running fast", well, under debian (unstable) all you have to do is a "apt-get install freenet", and hey presto, a running freenet node! I haven't tested it on other platforms, but as long as you have a functioning Java-VM, things should work...

And according to Alan Coxs diary, Theo, Paul-Henning Kamp (FreeBSD), and himself at least got along peacefully before and during the convention. By the way, Theo and some local OpenBSD developers sat down right after the convention and got to work at fixing bugs. Now THAT is dedication.
