When all is said and done, there will be diplomatic discussions. Eventually all sides will have to sit down and talk, the only question is whether it is done now or 10 years from now.

I'm a student on internship right now and while I agree that learning to uses languages of different perspectives is important, I don't think it is the university's duty to teach students any particular language. I think students should learn how to be computer scientist; they should gain the ability to learn on their own. It all goes back to giving someone a fish or teaching them how to get one themselves, right? I actually want to take more classes on language theory; I don't find it very productive to go to class to learn any one language, that should be something one does independently in my opinion. Teaching web development is also not something I would want to pay tuition for. I mean just what kind of universities are you talking about?? Maybe you are referring to some type of vocational schooling instead?

I've seen experts in C++ break down totally when they encounter Prolog and LISP. I've seen people who are steeped in a C++ background who's code in Java looks like something out of a programmer's worst nightmare.

I agree. I read an article about how most CS students today were just coming into the world as trained JAVA programmers. And it's sad when they are exposed to anything other than that mindset. I mean, why would 4 semesters of the same language be a good thing? Does it teach a student how to think abstractly or to adapt to a changing world? I'm glad my curriculum has been relatively flexible with a variety of languages to choose from. Some of my classes featured: Squeak (Smalltalk), Scheme (Lisp), Python, Lisp, C, Java. But yea, so now I'm learning C++ on my own, and it's not some difficult thing to do, just silly IMO when I compare it to concepts from other language that I prefer, namely ObjC. Anyways, a red flag is raised in my head when anyone claiming to be a professor also purports that 4 semesters of any language is the way to go.
  4. Enjoy the articles but take them for what they are on The Forgotten Failure of Apple's PowerTalk · · Score: 2, Informative

Daniel Eran writes a lot of pro-mac articles which leads one to believe that you can't really take any of his opinions on Apple with much weight. The articles are really great to read if you are an Apple fan but, otherwise I can see how they might come off a little bit overly infatuated with Apple. If he could use more facts and cite support then I'd find them a little more insightful, as it is, they remind me of those persuasive writing assignments from English class, except all with an pro-Apple slant. Seriously though, read one or two the articles and see if you don't get the same feeling.

  5. What about the pr0n angle? on U.S. House Rejects Net Neutrality · · Score: 0, Redundant

How will this affect porn? I remember someone saying that the pr0n angle determines a lot of the answers. Will service providers decide you can't watch Donkey Shows anymore or whatever else floats your boat? It will be like Utah except everywhere. I guess I can say good bye to my favorite news show "Democracy Now" as well, no doubt content providers like Fox News will pay Telcos to lower packet transmissions from their competitors websites??
