I work for an organization that moved from OS/2 to Windows NT 4.0 when it was released. We did it, as I recall, mostly because of the far superior number of applications available to Windows.
See, in a democracy (or even in a republic), when the government violates the law, the people need to know so they can decide whether it's time to change governments. When an individual criminal violates the law...well, it's still news, but it doesn't have the same level of import and urgency.
That's all very true, but it still leaves the unspoken question begging. Assuming that it's all true about the referenced story, I'm pretty sure that if the NY Times didn't print it, it wasn't because it just slipped through the cracks in their collective mind.
