He is probably talking about the public ed which I have to say depending on the area can be just okay or downright shite on a shingle. I ended up yanking my two boys out of public and going home school because not only was the public school a *football school* but probably one of the most bigoted places I had the misfortune to step foot in. The final straw was when a teacher decided to bring her bible INTO CLASS and instead on teaching English gave an hour long speech on "idolaters and sodomites" while my two boys, one Catholic and one gay, were in class.

We would have sued but my sister was in the final stage of cancer and frankly there was just too much stress to deal with their bullshit at the same time. So I told them where they could shove their bibles and went home school. Now the oldest is a Sophomore pred med and the youngest is deciding whether to go computer generated artworks or pursue his love of cooking and become a chef.

*-for those not in the USA a football school is where the entire school is based around...surprise...football. In a football school the books can be 20 years old and the computers worse than what you would dumpster dive, but the training gear would make most AA college programs green with envy and the footballers can pretty much do any damned thing they please and walk away from it. I myself didn't have to go to class for my last 4 years as the coach found me reading Asimov in detention on my first day of HS (The other coach said "Anyone not ready to give me 20 laps can get out of my gym"...so I left. I though I would die laughing when the principal put us in study hall/detention and told the coach "you NEVER tell them they can leave EVAR!") and drug me from class to class and got the teachers to sign off on giving me straight As without showing up, and in return I spent the time teaching my own class where I taught footballers how to spell flower and stood so they could pass the minimum skills test and keep playing. I swear everything was spelled phonetically by those guys, like floer for flower and stud for stood. But as long as they got to play the coach was happy and the classes were so dumbed down I was bored to tears anyway in school, so it all worked out just fine.

And have you ever priced a 4 port KVM switch for DVI? The words "highway robbery" come to mind, I call them completely full of shit myself. since the monitor we are talking about not only runs two boxes pretty much 24/7 but also hooks up to customers machines so I don't need to fire up that old CRT space heater in the corner? Either something supports native resolution or it don't, and when not fixing boxes I fire up FPSes and blast away and the only blurry vision I get is from these old eyes from sniping too long. But I don't see how anyone survives without KVM switches anymore as I've been using them on all my machines since the late 90s and they are handy as hell. If one of my neighbors were to show up at my apt with their tower going "Please help, something is wrong" I can have them plop it down by my PC desk and in less than 3 minutes I'm watching the boot screen. no muss no fuss and NO blurry picture, at least on the 100s of boxes and laptops I've plugged into the things.

As for TFA this is just damned smart business and if it were Apple or Google doing this the fanbois would be lining up to defend it. How much has MSFT spent on buying up patents this decade? How much have they spent on the patents they've filed? all this does is allow them to get a ROI and I would point out unlike certain OTHER companies...cough cough Apple cough...MSFT has been pretty damned good about giving RAND access to just about everything they've ever done. Don't forget that before they sued they offered TomTom the SAME RAND they offered every flash OEM and got the finger in return.

So don't get pissy that the "free as in beer" standing on a corner with a tin cup business model keeps you from paying RAND licenses, it isn't the job of MSFT or any other corp to prop up your failed business model, which I would argue the deaths or dying spasms of companies like Sun, Novell, and Mandriva shows this is the case. Oh and Proptip: Linux DOES infringe on MSFT patents, because it would be mathematically impossible for it NOT to with the sheer number of patents MSFT has, just as AMD infriges on Intel and vice versa. What are you gonna do, come up with a totally convoluted and ass backwards way for 2+2=4 to keep from infringing? Better start ripping all those video codecs out while you are at it, because with over 2000 patents MPEG-LA pretty much owns video compression/decompression.

In the end it isn't MSFT's fault you don't have the money to buy patents like everyone else, it isn't MSFT's fault you want to give your product away for free. The MSFT patents are filed in black and white for all to see at the patent office, feel free to try to rewrite your entire OS to avoid them. Good luck with that BTW.

Oh and a final bit of food for thought...you are worried about the old dog when it is the young wolves you need to worry about. As in TFA you can do a RAND license agreement and send MSFT on its way, while whom you can't pull that off with is the shitload of patent trolls buying patents like they are going out of style that will want everything including the office furniture, since the only money they make is by bleeding companies. Between that and TiVo showing the corps of the world how to turn Linux into a proprietary OS by simply adding code signing or eFuses? You got bigger things to worry about than MSFT setting up RAND licensing deals with headset makers.

What is the most buggy driver on the average Windows system? Why that would be the graphics driver. Which driver is the LEAST likely to be updated? Again that would be the graphics driver. Which piece of hardware gets the least security checks because it would slow it down? Which piece of hardware thanks to the unified driver arch can take down tens of thousands of machines with a single buffer overflow? I think you get the idea.

ActiveX was a seriously Forest Gump level of stupid and this? Right up there alongside it. This is an idea which will have little to NO benefit for end users, increased risks of infection, and for what? So some browser can go wobbly windows like the average Linux distro? Yeah that's worth the huge increased risk.

Thanks to DXVA and H.26x support on even the low end GPUs released today there is already a trivial way to accelerate video. All this will do is give Windows and Linux users something in common, a nice single target for malware writers. It is a DUMB idea, greatly increases risk for the end users and for what? So you can run a game in a browser? The Asian MMOs have been doing that for ages by having plug ins and a mix of native and web code, and frankly the security there isn't very great there either.

So if someone can explain how having a device with a super fast CPU of its own, at least 256Mb of super fast RAM of its own, and with the most buggy and least likely to be updated drivers access to running untested or vetted third party code off the net I'm listening. Oh and with today's firmware it would probably be pretty trivial to flash in a loader that makes sure the payload is loaded upon startup. Nice for the malware writers, not really seeing a point for my end users here.

Look up the video "Escape from City 17" for a video that sadly is better IMHO than a lot of the Hollywood crap, with decent looking effects that I could easily see making grade B movies affordable. Lets be honest McGrew if the story is good you won't care about CGI as long as it isn't so cheesy it distracts from the story. With today's game engines that is quickly becoming the case, and as soon as the next gen consoles hit the streets so that the *&^%*&^% game companies will update their engines the graphics will only get more realistic and lush.

So I'd say the future is integrating game tech into the TV and movie realms, just as we musicians have integrated PCs and digital recording into our trick bags. it is pretty obvious TV is ruled by shitty reality shows, simply because they are dirt cheap. I think Joss Whedon had it right when he said quirky offbeat TV will go to a "buy our shit" model, where you will by T-Shirts and mugs ( and like above credits) to pay for production and if you like the output buy the DVD to help ensure more episodes are made.

Personally I'm ALL for this idea, as it lets us the viewers decide if there are gonna be more Firefly or Faith TVS or whatever. And the really nice part is the ever improving game engines will make it so that it will come down to storytelling again, not which SFX house did the latest boom fest. Sure there will always be AAA money fests, like I doubt anyone would have been able to film LOTR without an assload of money, but there is no reason why good stories can't be told with current tech at a small fraction of the cost. Just because something is popular, even insanely popular right now doesn't mean it can't disappear tomorrow. Just ask all those folks who had Geocities pages.

Is it exposing CC data? If not I really don't see what the big whoop is as it isn't like Hulu is offering porn, right? Who cares if someone else knew you watched NCIS or some dumb reality show? Sure having fucked up code is never a good thing, but it isn't like a Sony "whoops we lost your CC numbers LOL!" level of fuckup is it?

Skimming TFA it looks more like they simply saw someone else's viewing history but TFA is kinda light on details besides "No CC numbers exposed!" so maybe someone who had it happen can clue us in...anything worth getting your panties in a wad over?

Well I'd say it is that and also for those that don't feel like spending iOS money on an iPad there are tons of CCC (Cheapo Chinese crap) pads running 2.0 that are a lot cheaper than the Galaxy.

I have sold quite a few lately of the $150 Cruz tablets which are running 2.0 I believe. For most here I'm sure they'd go "800Mhz? poo poo, 256Mb of RAM? Poo poo" but for the target demographic, which is women with kids, and the target usage, which is reading a book or checking their email while their kids play on the swings? Works like a charm, gets great battery life, fits easily in their purse.

So I have to wonder how many don't think they'll play with a tablet enough to justify iPad pricing and are just getting a CCC? Because after watching my customers play with the things I'm seriously thinking about picking up a couple of them for me and my GF. Sure it isn't gonna beat an iPad or run the newer Android, but so what? It would give me and Brenda an easy way to check our email when we are out somewhere and give me something to do when stuck at the doctor's office.

Honeycomb devices may be nice but I doubt I'll play with a pad long enough to find the cost appealing for one, not when I can get one of the cheap 2.0 pads for around $100.

Yeah but most developers I've seen usually have REALLY nice kits as nobody wants to compile on a P4, so we are talking minimum quad core with a whole pile of RAM and usually a nice GPU to boot.

But that kind of still misses my point as we are talking about ARM here, which correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't ARM's big selling point its reduced instructions? So why can't someone do JIT translation of the ARM instructions for X86?

Because it just seems to me a chip primarily designed for cell phones should be able to be emulated with even a low end quad and not have to chug which is what others here are saying the SDK does. I mean if surely my low end system has an AMD quad and an ATI GPU with 800 streams processors then the average Dev box is probably several orders of magnitude higher, so what's the problem? It seems like it would be easier here than the consoles as one isn't having to try to reverse engineer a DRM schema and both the X86 and ARM instruction set are pretty well documented.

We have emulators for everything from the old 2600 and C64 right up to the Nintendo DS and PS2 and from what I've seen they are quite speedy even on an early dual core CPU. Is ARM so complex that it simply can't be emulated? I thought ARM was a much simpler arch than x86.

Maybe the Google guys should hire some of the game emulator guys or at least have them give some pointers as I doubt the average cellphone ARM CPU is much more complex than emulating the entire PS2.
