In the NYTimes article, the author says OS X i s mounted on Next... but Darwin is based on free BSD, not Next. This is an important thing, because while Windows does it wrong all over again, Apple only has to focus on the graphical user interface, leaving all the complexity of an OS on the hands of the free software open source community, where things having this complexity level have to remain.
The fact is that the British press is juvenile when they have to be nasty with the members of their stablishment. This is a kind of internal stupid joke that went international when they hit the wrong guy. They wanted to say to Mr Blair how incompetent he is (again) and they end up telling the truth about Mr Gates.
What we do know now is that our specie is reaching the category of planetary plague, and everything we do endangers the survival of life on Earth. As we start colonization of oceans, we discover how much more fragil is this environment and how far we are from making a god job on settling without destroying.
As a lonely specie, or as lonely as *we* fill, we have to trust on our on judgement and be bold enough to imagine what is beyond our behaviour without having any kind of experience on multi planet colonization species. Remarking on that, is sad and unnecesary.
All your arguments are clever, but wrong. It is deadly dangerous to have the misfortune of owning them.
